Knowing that many designers today try to cram in extra accommodations
to achieve certain marketing goals, the P.A.E. team set out to create
a boat that would appeal to the majority of groups who go cruising:
couples with occasional guests. It makes little sense to dedicate
valuable space to areas that are only occasionally used. Instead,
the Coastal Pilot 35 pampers the couple with a magnificent master
stateroom, a spacious galley, and a generously proportioned head
with separate stall shower. The master stateroom features a queen-sized
island berth, measuring a maximum of 6'9" x 5' positioned awthartships.
Two large hanging lockers, a teak bureau and an abundance of drawers
and shelves easily fit all the clothing and personal effects one
would want for an extended cruise. A built-in reading chair faces
aft, served by a properly positioned reading lamp. To keep the cabin
bright and cheery, the bulkheads are faced with a light-colored
laminate, and the trim is beautifully finished, varnished teak.
Generous ventilation and natural lighting are enhanced by a large,
overhead hatch and sliding side windows. Two dorade vents provide
additional ventilation, especially when the weather prevents the
opening of hatches. A teak and spruce sole gives this special, private
space a traditional, nautical feel. The design and spaciousness
of this cabin encourages its use for reading and relaxing during
the day, giving each member his or her own space during long cruises
or while living on board.
An area that is often compromised on smaller vessels is the galley,
but not so on the Coastal Pilot 35. The galley down arrangement
gets it out of the way of the main living area, yet it is close
by for easy conversation and convenient serving. Its U-shaped configuration
makes cooking easy even while underway, and the vent hatch above
and sliding windows combine to provide an open, airy environment.
Standard equipment includes an AC/DC refrigerator and freezer, a
3-burner, stainless steel propane stove with oven and a carousel
microwave. A double stainless steel sink is installed in the Corian
countertop with an abundant amount of storage over and under the
counters in the form of drawers, cabinets and shelving. A large
pantry locker, located across the companionway stairs, will be welcomed
by those planning a long trip far away from grocery supplies. This
area can also be used to install an optional washer/dryer unit.
Under the pantry locker is the engine room access door.
Across from the galley and outside the owner's stateroom are the
head and shower. Accessed through a sliding door, the area is well
ventilated with a hatch and sliding windows. An electric toilet
is standard and is installed with plenty of elbow room around it.
A separate show stall features a bi-fold door, and the entire head
area is designed for easy maintenance and cleaning.
In many ways, the focal point of the Coastal Pilot is the Pilothouse/Main
Saloon/Helm area, as it is where the most time will be spent while
on board. A divided "Dutch Door" opens to the cockpit,
providing fresh air with the top half open. When closed, the fixed
window provides light and visibility. The saloon's side windows
open and incorporate screens for superior cross ventilation. Combined
with the wide "picture frame" window aft, the saloon is
an ideal place to view the surroundings while protected from the
elements. A comfortable, L-shaped sofa is to port, and a teak dinette
table allows serving up to four people. The sofa converts to a double
berth, so when occasional guests arrive, there is room to treat
them to a comfortable night's stay. And since the galley and head
are located forward, they'll have privacy if the owners are up and
about early. Everywhere one looks, the years of cruising experience
by P.A.E.'s design group is evident. There is a huge chart drawer
under the sofa, an overhead hand rail along the centerline, extra
storage compartments built into the sofa and along the centerline,
book shelves to starboard with room for a chair and a TV/entertainment
cabinet to port. Comfortable and cozy, the saloon will be an inviting
gathering place for friends and fellow cruisers in every port.
The helm shows the Nordhavn pedigree, as it is set up for serious
piloting. A custom bench seat for two incorporates drawers, storage
space and slide-out footrests. All around visibility is excellent,
with four forward-facing fixed windows that are reverse- sloped
to throw off water; two side windows; and two aft-facing windows.
The starboard side window slides open for extra ventilation and
easy communication with deck crew. The dash and the overhead instrument
panel provide ample room for a full array of electronics that will
be easy to see and to reach. A magnetic compass is mounted on the
helm dashboard. The slightly aft location of the pilothouse not
only provides excellent visibility, even when backing into a slip,
but it also contributes to a smoother, dryer ride for those at the
helm.
