Around The World Voyage : Commentary : Leg 3

April 8, 2002

At 8:30pm last night we finally arrived at our first stop, Palma de Mallorca. Crossing the Med. proved to be more of a challenge than we had figured. During the 6 day passage we had 4 days of head wind near gale force at times. Yesterday we struggled all day long against a 30-35 knot westerly that just wouldn't go away, delaying our arrival until near dark.

Palma is a total contrast to Greece in every way. Our clearance was as simple as getting a guest slip anywhere in the states. We were greeted as we came in by a marina employee who, after helping us tie up, promptly shuttled me to the marina office to do the paper work which took all of about ten minutes. We were so happy that it went so smoothly that we decided to celebrate last night. Well it's now 1:00pm and we are just now waking up.

Palma is really a beautiful place. We are near the old section of town, cobble stone streets barely wide enough to get a car down, old churches and a huge cathedral with an old Moorish fort right next to our marina. We have lots of work to do today but I hope we will break away later to do some sight seeing. My schedule is to stay here until Thursday morning and then head out for Gran Canary in the Canary Islands. Jeff
