It varies from place to place. Whenever possible we use a credit card. If that doesn't work we use cash. US dollars work everywhere in the North Pacific. A couple of time we have used travelers checks. If you are an American Express cardholder, you'll receive a better rate when exchanging travelers checks. Another advantage is that AE will hold mail and packages for an unlimited time, much better than general delivery at the local post office. They offer for their members a book with all their offices in the world. I have used them myself on previous cruises and it worked very well.
