I have heard that on rare occasions debris in the water such as fallen containers from container ships or logs can present a hazard to small vessels. Is there sonar equipment on the market that can detect this sort of debris? Does your Nordhavn 40 have such equipment? If not, why not?

Jim Leishman responds:

Unfortunately I don't think there is any reasonably priced sonar system that can detect a floating object on the surface like a container, log , etc. Systems do exist to detect fish (the bottom) out in front of the boat. But for a boat running in rough water at full cruising speed, I've not seen a system designed for that purpose. We worry about hitting something in the night and I wish such a system existed.
