Brian Leffler of Enosburg Falls, VT, asks:
I grew up around my grandparents cabin cruisers and spent 4 years as a sonar tech on destroyers and throughout my life I have always loved powerboats. What is the best way for someone to get started learning the basics needed to run a 40+ foot boat on offshore excursions?
I am greatly enjoying your log entries and have fond memories of sailing through some of the same waters. Fair winds and following seas.

Leishman responds:
I'd suggest that you attend the Trawlerfest events which are
held on both coasts. You can get a schedule from their website
- www.trawlerworld.com. Additionally, there's Passagemaker
Magazine and others that will give a good insight into offshore
cruising on powerboats.
