You may recognize this famous
Nordhavn 55 as she was the featured photo for the month of September in the
Nordhavn 2012 calendar. Amandla II is an exceptionally well
equipped boat that is set up to cross oceans and also for the coastal cruiser
who is looking for safety and comfort. She is professionally decorated with
quality (gold with dark blue trim) wool carpets, window treatments, pillows and
MSR bedding.
All of the popular factory options
had been selected along with a many custom add-on’s. The original owner crossed
the Pacific in her and used her as a platform for radio broadcasts (his
profession) so no expense was spared in the outfitting of this boat to be a
world circumnavigating platform for his popular radio talk show! Many cameras
and communication gear were installed to share the Nordhavn 55 Amandla
II adventure as she traveled. There are extra lights and outlets plus
more…
She resold in 2008 to her
current owner who took her from Hong Kong, through Southeast Asia to her
current moorage in Phuket, Thailand. The second owner has made dozens of
improvements including: A partition between the galley and saloon and
converting the utility / laundry room into a teak paneled, single berth cabin
and on the exterior, the addition of solar panels on her covered boat deck and
also a unique stainless dinghy mount. All of the upgrades are detailed in the
write up that follows. Due to an unfortunate health issue she is now listed
again for sale. The replacement new would exceed $US2.0 million AND include a
year and a half wait. If you have been studying the market for a well equipped
Nordhavn 55 please read on!
ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:
MAIN SALOON AND GALLEY:
Entering the saloon your first view will be one of a very
open and elegant interior. The teak joinery is beautiful and is well
complimented by the granite countertops and teak and spruce sole. The saloon
features an extra large built-in teak dinette table with a starburst wood inlay
to port with an L-shaped settee (abundant storage beneath). To starboard is a
TV cabinet with a large flat screen TV on a powered lift, and two comfortable chairs.
The settees are upholstered with Ultra Leather which is as comfortable as
leather and yet is very practical and easier to look after. Also included are
two factory custom bar stools done in teak wood.
The saloon and the entire ship, including the flat-screen
TVs in the salon and master suite, are wired with a state-of-the-art Bose sound
system. The Saloon, pilot house master stateroom and guest stateroom feature
satellite TV converters.
This single level “living room” is divided from an
extremely functional galley making it easy to prepare, cook and serve meals and
refreshments while enjoying the company of guests. The saloon transitions
down a couple steps into offshore functional galley that includes many brand
name appliances. One noticeable feature is the double basin sink which
maximizes space for the rest of the galley counter top. The faucet is a pull
out type for rinsing dishes, made by Grohe. The commercial grade GE propane
range top with GE electric oven is truly an impressive appliance and it is
properly trimmed with a stainless fiddle rail to secure pots and pans while
cooking underway. The granite counter tops extend up along the forward area.
There is excellent ventilation in the galley provided by an opening port light
outboard. A large stainless steel convection microwave with exhaust blower is
provided for those quick meals when making passages. The optional spice rack
is conveniently tucked away outboard. There are plenty of overhead and under
counter lockers for storing everything you need in a proper seagoing galley.
Also included are a GE trash compactor and GE dishwasher. Forward and towards
centerline is a full sized Sub Zero refrigerator and underneath are two Sub
Zero freezer drawers for cold storage and the bottom drawer includes an
icemaker.
Lower level crew cabin:
From the galley one goes down stairs, in this area you
have separate Bosch clothes washer and a top loading 7.2 cubic foot GE freezer.
This whole area has been beautifully upgraded to a crew cabin with varnished
teak veneer paneling and a single athwartship berth.
This utility area serves as the transition aft into the
engine room, with full standing room.
PILOTHOUSE:
The nerve center of the Nordhavn 55 is the pilothouse
where you have an unimpeded view of your surroundings – or of your nav
systems, live video shots from around the ship, or of your satellite TV or DVDs
on any one of three large Furuno console screens. The windows are all
commercial strength. Forward visibility is excellent through four large thick
tempered glass panes. The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes dark
Formica instrument panels. The overhead is finished in white Majilite with
Cantalupi lights. The floor is Lonseal vinyl with raised “coin” sized nonskid
pattern covered with carpeting.
Secured in the center of the control area is a beautiful
Stidd helm chair. The pilothouse is air conditioned with reverse cycle heating
for optimum climate control.
Below the counter of the helm dash and just forward of the
vertically mounted custom teak steering wheel, the wing engine and generator
control panels are positioned so that they can be easily monitored while
remaining out of the way. There is circuit breaker panel that houses all of
the DC and AC breakers, the air conditioning select breakers and more. All of
the electrical panels are clearly labeled and the current flow gauges are easy
to read digital displays. All of the ships electrical distribution panels are
hinged for access to wiring and each wire is labeled.
There is also a nice enclosed Captain’s cabin aft with a
double berth featuring lots of storage underneath the berth. For long passages
with a husband wife team it’s nice to have someone close by. In this area you
also have a separate head with a large opening port for great ventilation. This
saves a lot of time by not having to go up and down stairs.
Just forward of the pilot house cabin is a nice settee
bench fronted by a permanent fixed teak wood table with starburst pattern inlay.
The wheelhouse upholstery is done in Ultra leather. The settee includes
stowage underneath; there are two slide-out chart drawers directly below the
foot landing. Another large locker is located aft by the galley stairs.
The pilothouse includes two Dutch doors – port and
starboard – which lead out onto the Portuguese bridge. Outside you can
go up and aft to port to the boat deck, or out the starboard door make a quick
turn to the foredeck or aft to walk along the covered side deck on your way to
the cockpit.
The pilot house instrument panels feature all of the operational
electronic extras plus receivers to transmit and receive wireless headset
communication throughout the ship
GUEST STATEROOM:
The large VIP guest stateroom is forward, with separate
head and shower stall. There is a large double berth to port with drawers
below and book shelves behind the berth. An additional sea berth has been added
(a pipe berth “cot”) for extra crew or family as well.
Forward you adjoin generous head with tiled floors and a
large shower with bi-fold door. The sink has a broad surface area and there are
plenty of storage lockers for personal effects. In the forward area of the
stateroom are two large, lighted and cedar lined hanging lockers on both sides.
To starboard in the guest stateroom is an impressive ‘office sized’ desk with
swing out seat.
A separate air-conditioning digital control pad allows
adjustment of temperature and includes an outlet blower into the head. There are
two overhead outboard hatches in the center of the room and in the top of the
shower. There is plenty of light and available ventilation in this magnificent
forward area. One very nice feature is that between the office area and the
double berth is a by-fold door and a swing away bulkhead. When guests are
aboard the area can become very private. When one wishes, you can open the
by-fold door and swing the mid bulkhead forward to make this area large and
open. . The stateroom also features a satellite TV converter and TV outlet.
From this cabin through an opening floor hatch is a vast
storage area that has to be seen to be believed. The “basement” includes the
fresh water heater, and plumbing as well as access to the bow thruster. It
also has the upgraded aluminum overhead paneling.
MASTER STATEROOM:
There are two ways to access the owner’s stateroom. The
first is from the main saloon and the second is from the stairway coming from
the pilot house. The master is located amidships and the large queen sized
island berth runs athwartship for maximum comfort while underway. Stepping
inside the stateroom you will also appreciate the large hanging lockers. There
are three opening port lights outboard to port. The master stateroom is
air-conditioned. There are drawers under the bed. This is a very quiet place on
the boat (even while underway!) and a nice reclusive area to read or sleep.
The master connects to a large head to starboard, which
includes a fresh water toilet, granite counter and sink and a separate bath tub
with shower! The tub area has additional vertical granite. This entire
enclosure is designed for simple maintenance and is ventilated by two port
lights and a shower exhaust blower.
For down time entertainment, you will enjoy the wall mounted
flat-screen TV with built-in DVD player, and listening to the audio system
where you can enjoy music on the Bose speakers situated throughout the room. Two
custom Tempur-Pedic mattress pads make the master-suite bed a wonderful place
to catch a good night’s sleep.
ENGINE ROOM:
The engine room is located below the main saloon and is
primarily accessed through the laundry / utility room. You can also enter via
the aft door connecting the lazarette with the engine room and you can get into
the engine room through the removable floor sections of the saloon. There is
6’ plus headroom around the optional extra large engine.
The Nordhavn 55 engine room is exceptionally well laid
out. One of Nordhavns truly innovative passage-making developments is the
simplification of all ships systems; specifically the fuel system and its
relationship with the main engine. There is a built in fuel transfer and
polishing system to keep your fuel clean. The entire engine room is insulated
with sound deadening foam and shrouded with perforated aluminum sheeting for a
clean professional look. All of the valves for fuel lines are clearly labeled
and neatly tucked away behind easily opened hatches. The through hulls are
also clearly identified and easy to get to. The amount of space in this area
makes it a simple task to inspect the oil level of the generator and wing
engine. The main engine has a keel cooler recessed in the hull and is the
exhaust is dry stacked.
The engine room features a Lugger 70 HP wing engine to
starboard – with its’ own day tank of fuel, and a 20kW Northern Lights
generator to port. There is a Reverso oil change system for easy evacuation of
the main, wing and generator– a key to ensuring machinery longevity. Many
spare parts are included with the ship.
LAZARETTE:
Located beneath the aft deck cockpit, the lazarette is
accessed via a fiberglass deck hatch. The hydraulic steering is located aft and
there is also an emergency tiller mounted. All of the through hulls are easy
to get to. The Trace pure sign 4000 watt 24volt inverter/battery charger is
located in the lazarette too. This lazarette is a working space that is easy to
get around in for routine maintenance and inspection. Additionally, for sport
and underwater recreation, there is a Bauer Jr. Dive Compressor with100’ Hookah
hose, and a four SCUBA tank storage unit.
COCKPIT:
This cockpit is a great
place to Barbeque on the built-in LPG appliance or to just relax when at
anchor. Amandla II also has the extended swim & dive platform with stainless steel
swim ladder. Behind the port aft locker is a sealed propane locker that is
vented overboard and contains three braced aluminum tanks. A Glendinning power
50 amp shore power cord retriever system is installed on the stern. A fiber
glass consol with sink and fresh water faucet is also located forward. There is
a boarding door to starboard along the side deck and one aft to the swim
platform. The cockpit freshwater wash down makes it easy to maintain this area
and there is a built in Scandvik hot and cold freshwater shower. Extra
stainless steel handrails have been installed to make moving about easier and
safer while underway.
FOREDECK:
Inside the aft part of the Portuguese bridge there is a
large molded in storage area for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords,
fenders, etc.
The stout stainless steel double anchor roller is backed
by a rugged Maxwell 24 volt windlass with chain stopper that can be operated by
deck foot button and/or by a toggle in the pilothouse and fly bridge. The
anchor is a 170 lb. Aritex Stainless plow and is attached to 400’ of Hi-test
chain. Shore power connections are located forward to port and include a
30-amp house, 50-amp house and 50-amp air conditioning connection.

Recent
upgrades:
· One of the main improvements is the installation of solar
panels (1,000 W) on the upper deck Bimini which has widely reduced the carbon
print of the vessel and has reduced the generator time to one third of the
previous use.
· Another major improvement is the installation in Singapore of
a stainless-steel tender rack on the upper deck overhanging the transom which
has created a huge social space on the upper deck with a large teak table and 6
chairs and has facilitated the loading and off-loading of the tender without
damaging the line and looks of the vessel.
· This huge space on the upper deck is covered by a custom-made
Stamoid Bimini supported by a 316 stainless-steel structure. In the Tropics,
the upper deck is the second lounge of the vessel.
· All extinguishers and life raft were serviced in 2012 by a
specialized company in Bangkok.
· Major preventive maintenance on all hydraulic systems,
steering, crane and stabilizers in August 2012. All cylinders seals replaced
and hosepipes/ fittings controlled or replaced.
Miscellaneous
improvements include:
· Cockpit door veneered with
teak inside (aft end of saloon)
· Upholstery: Chesterfield
black leather throughout (2012)
· Extra teak bookshelves
throughout
· Black ceiling headliner in
wheelhouse
· New white ceiling headliner
in salon
· Second backup generator Mastervolt 4KVA (used as night or
batteries charger generator)
· Main charger/inverter Xantrex
· Backup shore charger 220VAC Mastervolt
· Solar panels on aft deck
(1000 W Panasonic)
· 2 solar panels regulators
· Interior lights all LED (a
dramatic improvement with less heat and lesspower draw)
· Mooring lights: LED
· Xantrex battery monitor in wheel-house
· Stainless-steel tender rack
behind aft deck (316 stainless-steel, installed in 2012)
· Tender 3.2m Zodiac center console and Garmin sounder/plotter with 30HP Honda
(2012)

broker’s comments:
If you were to order a new 55 similar to Amandla
II your waiting time from now until taking off would easily be longer
than one year and the retail comparable pricing would approach or exceed
$2,000,000.00! Preventive maintenance has always been a rule on this boat and
no expense has been spared by the captain/owner. For instance in August 2012,
following a minor leak on the port steering cylinder, the owner decided to
replace all the hydraulics hoses and seals on the vessel’s cylinders
(stabilizers, steering and crane/davit). All of the fittings exposed to marine
environment on the crane are now stainless-steel. And all the service batteries
were replaced in 2011. These are just two examples of the high and professional
level of maintenance on this boat which has always been ready to leave the port
on short notice.
The captain/owner used to keep on the boat not less
than six months of provisioning! And an extensive stock of spare parts provided
by Lugger would allow many minor and major repairs on the engines it was
necessary (gaskets, fuel lift pumps, impellers, full sets of injectors, fuel
filters etc.). The boat is in Bristol condition with many
interior/exterior/machinery/cosmetics upgrades.
Maintenance and services have all been done by the
book. All systems/equipments are fully operational. Amandla II has never been
left unattended in a marina and was constantly used and maintained by the
captain/owner.
Owner’s comments:
“I have tried my best to upgrade Amandla
II to a point where she is "greener" with a second small night
generator and the solar panels. This has turned Amandla II into a more
self-sufficient vessel for long periods off-shore or at the anchor. The plan
was also to reduce the use of Air-conditioning with the installation of twenty
24VDC fans throughout and LEDs everywhere and a second Mastervolt charger. On a
sunny day, the 1000 watts solar panel and the timer on the Sub Zero fridge
keeps the batteries up and running until early morning... The experience has
shown that altogether it was a very successful initiative with a very sensible
reduction of generator running time that I would replicate if I was one day to
build another Nordhavn...
On the exterior side, the three main
alterations are the covered aft-deck which has created a
huge social space with a table for six; the
tender cradle hanging over the cockpit which has
turned the off-loading and loading of the
tender into a very easy operation that I can do
singlehanded and the second tender chocks on
the transom platform which is suitable for the
main tender or a smaller one.”
