Arctic Tern" is the consummate Nordhavn 35 for Northwest cruising. She is a veteran of 6 cruises to Southeast Alaska, and has been impeccably maintained. The interior is absolutely clean, warm, and comfortable. The equipment list is comprehensive. Detailed specifications to follow soon.

ACCOMODATIONS & LAYOUT:

“Arctic Tern” is a superb Nordhavn 35.  She exudes pride-of-ownership from the level of equipment to the obvious care she has received from decks to engine room.  She also conveys the comfort of her interior appointments in her joinery, soft goods, and her three-modes of heating systems, perfectly matched to Northwest cruising.

In April 2011, Arctic Tern was hauled at Delta Marine in Seattle, for new bottom paint which included stripping all of the previous coats, including the epoxy base layer, and re-applying both epoxy and two coats of bottom paint. She will likely not require new bottom paint for 2 years.

At the same time, the propeller was removed and re-tuned, the hull topsides were waxed, and both bow and stern thruster propellers were replaced with the latest Side-Power design, which operates more quietly and produces slightly more thrust.

The Nordhavn 35 was designed and built primarily as a two person yacht, with a convertible dinette for occasional overnight guests.  Her looks are striking - this is a purpose built boat with an unquestionable pedigree.  At 35-feet she has the detail and attributes of much larger yachts.

The pilothouse is aft with the trawler mast placed just forward of the windscreen.  Enter from the cockpit through the commercial grade Diamond Sea/Glaze Dutch door into the salon/pilothouse.  The first impression is of warmth and solid craftsmanship. “Arctic Tern” has an L- shaped dinette with fixed teak table to port. There is a settee to starboard with helm bench seat and helm station forward.

The helm station has an impressive console well proportioned for logical and legible electronics display.  The single lever engine control and bow and stern thruster joysticks are located right on the console to make running or maneuvering in close quarters a breeze.

A hidden bookcase aft and to starboard in the pilothouse has a cover that hinges down to provide a stand up chart table for laying out paper charts. The visibility from the pilothouse is exceptional.

The U-shaped galley is just forward to port and down two steps from the pilothouse, making communication between the salon and galley easy .  The galley is equipped with a Seaward electric 4-burner stove with oven, a NovaKool upright refrigerator with freezer, and Broan trash compactor.

The head with its separate stall shower is to starboard opposite the galley. The head itself is a Jabsco “Quiet-flush”.  The shower has a bi-fold door, seat, and single handle mixing valve.

The master stateroom is forward of the galley.  It features an athwarthship queen bed with access on three sides, nightstands on both sides, lots of locker space, and a separate changing seat forward.  Access to the chain locker is forward of the changing seat.

The interior is well-lit throughout.  There are hatches, windows and dorade vents for great ambient light and ventilation.  The galley and master stateroom are appointed with laminate bulkheads trimmed in teak for additional reflectivity.  The amount of storage in lockers and drawers throughout has been described as “exceptional” by more than one Nordhavn 35 owner.  There is evidence of exceptional yacht quality joinery everywhere.

The engine room is located below the pilothouse level through a sound-insulated door with window below the pantry locker in the galley.  Most service and maintenance items are accessed from the easily transited starboard side.  There is also access to the port side around from the aft end of the engine.  The pilothouse sole also has a large hatch, which lifts up for overall mechanic’s access.

Outside and aft is a huge cockpit covered full-length by the boat deck for weather protection.  There is also a full canvas enclosure for added utility space in cooler wet weather.  There is a molded in swim platform and ladder aft.  Beneath the cockpit is a spacious lazarette.

For access to the foredeck and boat deck, there are side decks outboard of the pilothouse secured with 1.25” diameter stainless steel rails.  The boat deck above the pilothouse is accessed by via folding steps on the mast and is the perfect place for tender storage.

The trawler mast and boom are designed to serve as a dinghy davit.  The electric boom winches have been upgraded on “Arctic Tern”. The mast has a radar bracket and an assortment of antennas installed at the head.  It also has side ladders for access to the crow’s nest.  The mast is hinged to tilt forward to reduce bridge clearance, or for overland shipment.

There is a beautifully shaped Gloucester Gull 14’ rowing dory mounted on the pilothouse roof/boat deck. The Bullfrog 10’ primary tender is mounted on a Nick Jackson davit off of the molded-in swim platform.  The 10’ Bullfrog dinghy with its 15-hp Mercury outboard features polypropylene pontoons and an aluminum hull underbody – so you can drag it up any rocky or oyster shell-laden beach without fear of puncture.  The Bullfrog has an innovative fiberglass molded insert with a seat and steering console.

The anchor well forward is set up for two anchors with dual rollers and a secondary deck pipe.  There are foot switches for the Muir windlass and there is a seawater deck wash for cleaning the anchor chain during retrieval.

All of the stainless railing is 1.25” diameter tubing, beautifully welded and polished.   The only exterior woodwork is a richly varnished caprail above the transom.

The cockpit is completely covered by the boat deck overhang.  Two cockpit doors - one aft and one to starboard – provide access to the swim platform, which is also fitted with a swim ladder. There is a large hatch in the cockpit sole for access to the lazarette.  Inside the lazarette is the Hurricane diesel furnace, the Hydraulic steering and autopilot gear, the hot water heater and house batteries. There is even a built in storage shelf.   Since, “Arctic Tern” has an electric stove in the galley, there is a spare cockpit sole locker for storage.  A fresh water spigot is located aft in the port cockpit locker.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

“Arctic Tern” was built and equipped for the Pacific Northwest.  Her owners are very experienced, and have used her to explore Southeast Alaska.  After commissioning in Dana Point, CA she made the coastal trip north over a two-week period, arriving safely and without incident in Puget Sound where she has remained based in the Seattle area.

“Arctic Tern” is outfitted as a “Northwest Edition” featuring a Hurricane diesel hydronic heating system and a rugged Bullfrog dinghy.  Her electronics package is sensible and top end, with all of the necessities located at her beautifully laid out helm station.

After six seasons prowling the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, her owners have listed her for sale in order to pursue other interests.  Current on all engine oil and zinc changes, she is impeccable. With 2916 engine hours on her Yanmar 370-hp main engine and the Northern Lights 6 kW generator with 527 hours she is seasoned and primed for more.

“Arctic Tern” has been run almost exclusively in “displacement mode” rarely ever running over 8 knots or 2200 rpm.  Loaded and running at wide-open throttle, 3300 rpm, she will achieve 11 knots, but her true groove is at slower speeds.

Featured on the inside cover of the P.A.E. Nordhavn 35 company brochure she is a spectacular looking yacht ready for more adventure.

“Arctic Tern” is an exceptional boat and an outstanding value. Her owners have spared no expense in equipment and outfitting.  “Arctic Tern” is ready for an adventurous couple who wants to safely and comfortably travel to more remote coastal cruising grounds.

Please call today to learn why, after spending close to two weeks aboard, Power and Motoryacht’s Bill Pike said in his review of the Nordhavn 35 in the December 2002 issue:

“Indeed, for a cruising couple, there’s no finer vessel on the market in my opinion.”
