INTRODUCTION

“Arcadia 1” is hull 36 of the impressive Nordhavn 46 fleet.  She was built in 1994 and was constructed during the peak of production for this model.   “Arcadia 1” was a special order by her original owners who kept her and traveled with her for over a dozen years before selling her to move up to a larger Nordhavn.  The second owners purchased her in San Francisco with the express purpose of spending this past spring and summer “testing” the cruising lifestyle.  After some modest upgrades of gear and equipment they travelled for over 2500 miles up into the Pacific Northwest and have moored her in Alaska – not far from their home in Canada.   The joy and success of the summer travels has convinced the sellers that this is the lifestyle for them and now they have their sights set on a larger Nordhavn (see a pattern here?) and have placed her for sale as they do not wish to be two boat owners.  “Arcadia 1” is a Canadian registered vessel with US duty paid.  Please read on to learn more about her.

Accommodations & Layout:

There are several key items to compare when evaluating Nordhavn 46’s, and the first question is which layout does this yacht have?  “Arcadia 1” is the traditional master stateroom aft configuration (with Queen sized berth and en suite head/shower) – layout A - which provides much better sleeping accommodations underway in rough seas during passage (and has the bonus feature of access to the master from the saloon so you don’t have to go up and down the pilothouse stairs).  She also has the nice white laminate to keep this room bright and airy.  The guest stateroom is forward, approached from the pilothouse and was built with a double berth to port a settee/single berth to starboard and has the head/shower forward.

Another choice is whether the galley is accessed from aft or inboard and 4636 is the popular aft arrangement.  Each 46 had a choice of furniture for the starboard side of the saloon and on “Arcadia 1” a full length settee was ordered, providing a nice place to lounge and a great alternative berth during rough stretches of water.  On the starboard saloon side there is a C shaped dinette with built in, upholstered settees. The interior finish during construction is a choice of white laminate or varnished teak on the interior and “Arcadia 1” has a nice compliment of both.

Only one flybridge 46 had been built before she was ordered and at that time a flybridge was considered of more value to a coastal cruiser (along with the master forward) and forces you to give up the watch berth in the pilothouse so was not ordered.  And she has a pilothouse with access aft from the salon/galley and a flight of stairs that leads forward to the staterooms and even has a padded helm seat. She is a single engine dry stack (a handful of 46s were built as twins with wet exhaust) and the engine room door is located in the master shower.

The convenience of a cockpit ladder to the boat deck via a hatch is also a nice touch on “Arcadia 1”, as are the cockpit boarding doors to port and starboard.  She looks the part of a salty sea craft with her Paravane rig and mast and boom arrangement, this is a classic Nordhavn 46.

The Nordhavn 46 design is a true full displacement long distance trawler with hundreds of thousands of sea miles under her keel and a half dozen circumnavigations completed by sister ships.  Her Taiwan craftsmanship is evident throughout and all minor items found during her survey in March, 2008 have been addressed (including strip and revarnish cap rails, clean fuel tank, new bottom paint, repack stuffing boxes, install new transducers, service main, wing and generator… and multiple, as should be expected, mionr repairs), she has just completed a successful season and is as ready as a wound top.  If you are looking for a rugged, solid, fuel efficient passage maker that is easily single handed, ideal for a couple and will easily accommodate four adults for travel “Arcadia 1” is a 46 you should visit!
