INTRODUCTION:

Darlin’ is an exceptional Nordhavn 40 that is ready for adventure.  She is a ‘seasoned’ ship that has been thoughtfully equipped for extensive cruising.  The original owner took delivery in California and cruised up to Alaska before heading south along the US west coast and cutting through the Panama Canal.  She eventually wound up in Rhode Island where her present owners purchased her in 2003.  The seller has enjoyed active cruising on the US east coast, spending considerable time aboard primarily on weekend jaunts off the North Carolina coast.  The husband has been an active participant as crew on numerous other Nordhavns and quite frankly is having all his fill of cruising on OPN (other peoples Nordhavns) and realizes that Darlin’s legacy is ready for a new captain and mate to keep her active.  She is in great shape, having just completed a haul out which also addressed the typical minor issues that occur during normal use.   She is available for immediate transfer of ownership and priced to sell quickly (Canadian citizens this is a US built boat – California residents the old tax laws have come back!)   Please contact your Nordhavn representative for more details and to schedule an appointment to view her.

DARLIN’ – HULL NUMBER 11 a US built NORDHAVN 40:

Only (44) Nordhavn 40s were built in the US (new construction is still available with all building taking place in China now).  Many Nordhavn 40s have taken to sea and can be found prowling the oceans of the world.  This exceptional passage making design is a proven performer.  In 2001 the staff at Nordhavn completed an ambitious circumnavigation on a sister ship (hull 21) Nordhavn 40.  And several owner operators have successfully completed Transatlantic and Transpacific adventures easily transiting these arduous blue water passages.  With a range of well over 3000 miles consider the possibilities…with Darlin’ you really can go anywhere!

Darlin’ has been meticulously maintained and boasts an exceptional selection of equipment and special features.  With several thousand offshore miles now under her keel, Darlin’ has been thoroughly broken-in to insure that she will continue a superior life style at sea for many years to come.

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:

LIVING AREAS:

MAIN SALOON AND GALLEY:

Entering in to the saloon through the watertight and double dogged commercial strength Diamond SeaGlaze door you will be impressed with her spacious saloon.  The interior is beautifully appointed with lavish teak woodwork – a hallmark of Pacific Seacraft.  The saloon features a beautifully upgraded custom built matching Corian table to starboard with L-shaped settee (abundant storage beneath).  A detached teak Pompanette table which is a hi-lo doubles as the dinette and a coffee table.  To port is a handsome teak cabinet area with locker doors and storage.  TV and Satellite equipment are located beneath.  The interior is tastefully decorated with resilient earth tone fabric upholstery and Berber carpeting that is a great blend for ‘hiding’ foot traffic.  This entire aft area is ideal for dining, entertaining and relaxing.  A Sony stereo system and Marine Air air-conditioning system help maintain a pleasing ambiance.

The saloon transitions into an elegant galley that includes many brand name appliances.  Outboard is a gimbaled Force 10 propane stove/oven/broiler with built in potholders to simplify cooking underway.  There is a GE microwave oven. Refrigeration is provided by a large Sub Zero unit with a beautiful teak paneled door.  For trash there is a slide in trash bin – easier to use and no electrical issues that might occur with a trash compactor. The counter tops are Corian and the sole is finished with resilient Lonseal vinyl non-skid flooring – this is a smart looking and practical galley.  A Sub Zero freezer is located to starboard just before the steps leading to the wheelhouse.

GUEST STATEROOM:

Going forward and down the steps to the living area the bulkheads are lush with beautiful varnished teak panels.  To port is the guest stateroom, which includes a single upper berth and a lower berth that features a slide out arrangement for easy conversion into a wider bunk.  A Splendide combination clothes washer and dryer is forward concealed by a nice teak door and a large hanging locker is located inboard.  Access aft to the engine room is provided by a gasketed Diamond Sea Glaze door that minimizes sound.  The guest stateroom is finished in teak.  Ventilation is provided by two large port lights and additional fresh air is supplied from the forward dorade.  This room is also air-conditioned.

HALLWAY AND HEAD:

At the top of the steps is a pair of convenient fresh water tank sight glasses for the two outboard water tanks.  The hallway is carpeted and an easy passageway to transit.  Across the hallway from the guest stateroom is a large head that includes an upgraded fresh water Vacuflush toilet, Corian counter and sink and a separate shower stall with elegant etched glass door.  The shower includes Grohe shower fixtures and a built in seat with teak slats.  The head area is molded fiberglass and white Formica with teak trim.  The sole is molded fiberglass nonskid – this entire enclosure is designed for simple maintenance and is ventilated by port lights, a shower exhaust blower and shower sump pump.

MASTER STATEROOM:

Stepping up into the forward master stateroom you will find an ideal sleeping area with a large queen sized island berth.  This room is a testament to quality teak joinery with abundant lockers and drawers including two large cedar lined hanging lockers.  The port hanging locker has a concealed wall safe. The berth is hinged to lift up allowing access to a large storage area beneath which includes a separate Lifeline 8-D battery that powers the windlass and bow thruster.  There are several through hulls, the bow thruster motor and the entire below bed area is well lighted by dome lights.  The master berth features a specially ordered HMC Handcraft box spring mattress with custom fabric to match the interior fabrics.  The Marine Air air-conditioning provides excellent climate control.  And, you can easily get to the cavernous chain locker via a double door locker all the way forward.  Additional light and ventilation is provided via the overhead hatch, dorade vent, opening port lights on the hull sides.

PILOTHOUSE:

The pilothouse is directly above the hallway and includes all of the necessities required for operating the vessel from this protected command station.  All of the windows are tempered glass commercial grade by Diamond SeaGlaze.  Outboard on each side of the pilothouse you can walk out to the Portuguese bridge through heavy Dutch doors.  Added ventilation is provided by two Hella fans.  Darlin’ features a custom made bronze and wood ships wheel.  The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes charcoal colored Formica instrument panels.  Darlin’ has an extensive navigation and communications electronics package purposely installed for simplifying control of the vessel.  Morse engine controls are provided for the main and wing engines.  The bow thruster joystick and windlass remote toggle are ideally positioned.  The pilothouse is all varnished teak and the sole is covered with Lonseal non-skid vinyl. The pilothouse is air conditioned for added comfort.  The ships electrical distribution panel is hinged for access to wiring and each wire is labeled.  Aft in the pilothouse is a comfortable bench seat with a nice teak table so that you can cruise comfortably sitting down.  Behind the seat is a cushioned watch berth.

WORKING AREAS:

ENGINE ROOM:

The engine room is located below the main saloon.  It is incredibly spacious (primarily due to the incorporated hull maintenance strakes) and access to all machinery and equipment is unimpeded.  The main engine room entrance is through a stout watertight door aft in the guest stateroom, and you can also enter from above via a removable hatch in the aft salon sole. The reliable Lugger diesel is on centerline with two huge fiberglass fuel tanks installed outboard and trimmed with perforated aluminum sheeting.  You can easily get to both sides of the engine.  There is a specially designed fuel management system with a fuel supply reservoir, return manifold and dual Racor fuel filters with vacuum gauge are positioned conveniently forward of the main engine.  A water sensor is installed in the fuel supply reservoir and is wired to a wheelhouse alarm. The fuel system (by adding the wing engine) has been plumbed to include a fuel transfer pump and polishing strainer so you can clean and transfer diesel fuel.  Aft and to port are several intake through hulls and strainers and the Yanmar wing engine with its’ own dedicated fuel tank.  The main engine has a 4D start battery and the wing/generator start battery is a Group 31. The Northern Lights generator is mounted aft to starboard and is encased in a sound shield.  Forward to starboard are the fresh water accumulator tank and pump as well as the shower sump pump and strainer.  The engine room is extremely well lit by DC dome lights and sealed AC florescent light fixtures.  The floorboards are sealed with gel coat and there is a small opening hatch above the main shaft stuffing box to make inspection of this vital area simple when underway.

LAZARETTE:

Located beneath the aft deck cockpit, the lazarette is accessed via a massive fiberglass deck hatch.  A battery bench/box runs along the forward bulkhead and houses the centerline Lifeline AGM batteries.  The house bank was upgraded to include one additional 8-D house batteries instead of the usual three.  The hydraulic steering is located aft and there is also an emergency tiller mounted.  The Seward hot water heater and Freedom 25 inverter/battery charger are also located here.  This is a working space with no hidden areas that is easy to get around in for routine maintenance and inspection.

EXTERIOR:

DECK AREAS:

Her upgraded two-tone deck with contrasting gel coat colors between the smooth and diamond pattern non-skid are very easy on your eyes, particularly on a bright sunny day.  The Nordhavn 40 is very safe when on deck.  Even the narrow ledges outboard of the saloon have molded in non-skid for sure footing. The foredeck and boat deck feature stainless steel stanchions and lifelines.  The protection offered by the Portuguese bridge forward of the wheelhouse is an incredibly secure area for scanning the horizon while underway.  The cockpit is high walled and includes built in seating.   Excellent deck drains and freeing ports quickly shed any water that comes aboard. The two main Lewmar hatches are covered in canvas, as are the electric boom winches and windlass to protect these motors.  The dinghy and outboard are also covered with maroon Sunbrella.  Getting up aft to the boat deck is done on the starboard side hemmed in by protective stainless steelrailing.  The boat deck is a very large area and easy to get around.  The top of the pilothouse has been reserved for installation of various electronics antennas and a Switlik 6 man life raft with hydrostatic release. With no exterior wood to maintain a thorough fresh water wash down with mild soap and a soft brush have kept Darlin’ looking as sparking as the day she was delivered.

COCKPIT:

The cockpit is a fun place to hang out. The Magma party size BBQ is propane (you can use separate propane canisters or use the ships propane) and the grill has a Sunbrella cover.   There is a boarding door to starboard and one aft to the molded in swim platform.  The aft outboardlockers also double as seats and there is a portable swim ladder for easy access getting back aboard.

FOREDECK:

You get to the foredeck by going forward via the Portuguese bridge through a hinged molded fiberglass door on the starboard side.  Immediately forward of the Portuguese bridge there are two molded in deck boxes along centerline for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords, fenders, etc.  The stout stainless steel double anchor roller is backed by a rugged Maxwell electric windlass that can be operated by deck foot buttons and/or by a toggle in the pilothouse.  The anchor is a 60 lb. CQR and is attached to 400’ of BBBchain.  There is a fresh water deck wash down spigot and the area immediately aft of the rollers is smartly designed with a recessed anchor well that drains overboard.

BOAT DECK:

Leaving the pilothouse and heading aft you go up a few steps to the boat deck.  This area is dominated by the mast and boom which serves multiple purposes including; securing the dry stack exhaust, supporting the paravane outriggers and operating as the dinghy davit.  The paravane outriggers are a marvelous assemblage of lines and cables that can be put into action in minutes and make a tremendous difference in controlling side to side rolling when out in a seaway.  Another advantage of the outriggers is that they will reduce motion at anchor when set up into flopper stopper mode.  The boom is equipped with electric boom winches, which serve double duty as paravane fish retrievers, and as boom positioning operators when set up in the davit mode.   The boom winches feature a single control panel with push buttons and this unit can be hooked up to a fitting in the cockpit as well.   The EPIRB with hydrostatic release is mounted on the side of the stack.  Two custom fiberglass storage boxes have been mounted on either side of the stack to provide additional outside locker space. With several thousand offshore miles now under her keel, Darlin’ has been thoroughly broken-in to insure she will continue a superior lifestyle at sea for many years to come.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Darlin’ is a US Coast Guard documented vessel.  All recommended maintenance on machinery and equipment has been completed to manufacturer’s requirements.  The hull has been cleaned and waxed on a regular basis and new bottom paint was applied in the spring of 2007.  This is an excellent opportunity and great value for anyone interested in purchasing an outstanding long-range passage maker.

Special note:  Canadian buyers may have import advantages to consider possibly effecting duty and taxes since this is a US built vessel.  California has recently reverted to the “old” sales tax rules which may create savings for in-state residents.
