“Maria Elena” is a striking Nordhavn 40II with a beautiful white hull.  She is one of our popular flybridge models and has been outfitted with all of the most practical factory options and tastefully decorated by her sellers who benefited greatly from their experience of owning a previous Nordhavn 40!  It is hard to imagine that a nicer 40 could be made available; this is almost like purchasing a beautifully decorated model home that is available for sale before ever being shown to the public. If you are interested in owning a Nordhavn 40 flybridge which looks better than new, has low hours and has been shaken down then please read on to learn more about “Maria Elena”.

The Nordhavn 40 summary is: two-stateroom layout featuring a master stateroom with island berth forward and a guest stateroom with two single bunks amidships to port.   There is a head with stall shower to starboard which is centrally located near both cabins and just a few quick steps down from the saloon /galley area.  The full width main saloon and galley are on a single level and connect to the cockpit.  The raised pilothouse and the optional fly bridge above make piloting a dream.

OWNERS COMMENTS:

An opportunity like this doesn’t come around often. The owners of Maria Elena spared no expenses when it came time to ordering their second Nordhavn.  Whether commanding a view from the fly bridge on a hot sunny day or sipping a hot cup of  coffee in the heated pilothouse on a cold blistery morning or possibly just relaxing dock side in the salon watching a Sunday afternoon game on one of three HD/LCD flat screen TV’s, Maria Elena offers it all.

This perfect combination of functionality and style did not come by chance.  Having previously owned N4050 the owners knew exactly what they wanted when they ordered their second 40II.  Starting with the exterior they knew they wanted an all white Nordhavn 40 and she is stunning!  Maria Elena is only the second all white Nordhavn 40 ever produced.  The addition of dark tinted salon windows softens the battleship toughness that lays below the surface just enough to give her a slightly softer and elegant look.

Add in a custom interior inspired by the warmth of the tropics and you have the perfect combination of serious offshore capability and at-home comfort.  The captain desired a tropical look while the first mate (who collaborated with PAE’s local interior designer) wanted something a bit more elegant.  The result was a unique blend of the warm tropics with a touch of silk and satin.   Earth tone colors of the saloon’s custom two inch reveal carpet highlights the teak flooring underneath while Roman window shades provide the privacy one requires while dock side and helps control temperature inside.  The galley is fully equipped with stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops.  A queen size island master is decorated with custom silk and satin bedspreads, throw pillows and sham.  The master features a large integrated HD/LCD flat screen television mounted on the aft bulkhead above the vanity.

Top sides there are two custom Bimini top’s - one for the flybridge and one very large foldable top for the aft deck above the salon.  Both provide over six foot headroom and protection from the sun.  The optional third person jump seat on the flybridge ensures everyone shares the commanding view.  Engine controls and electronics installed topside allow for hours of cruising “Al Fresco”.  Lounging on top of the aft deck behind the flybridge sipping margaritas and listening to XM satellite radio while cooking up lunch on the stainless steel Bar-B-Q is a great summer past time.  After a swim you can rinse off in the aft cockpit with the built in Hot/Cold shower.

When the weather turns cold top side the pilothouse is the place to be.  FURUNO electronics and TRAC Stabilizers supports ones desire to cross an ocean or just cruise the bay.  There is even a integrated Satellite HD/ LCD flat screen television mounted on the port side of the large console for the person not on watch that still wants to enjoy the magic that only a pilothouse offers.  Need a little more comfort?  Start up the generator and turn on the reverse cycle heat / air-conditioning.  It doesn’t get much better than this!

When done cruising or just relaxing for the weekend the owners close up Maria Elena with a full compliment of custom white pilothouse windows screens and dark blue flybridge console, hatch and windless covers.

While the owners have mixed emotions about selling her, they realize it is necessary in order to reach their goal of an early retirement and fulfillment of their dreams of cruising full time on their third Nordhavn.

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:

LIVING AREAS:

MAIN SALOON AND GALLEY:

Entering in to the saloon through the watertight and double dogged commercial strength door you will be impressed with the spacious saloon.  The interior is beautifully appointed with lavish teak woodwork.  The saloon features a very open feel mostly due to the larger sized windows finished with teak trim that are one of the many improvements to be seen on the 40IIs.  To port is a comfortable settee with storage beneath. .  A flat screen television is mounted forward to starboard. The interior is tastefully decorated with ultraleather upholstery and features beautiful teak wood floors throughout.  This entire aft area is ideal for dining, entertaining and relaxing.  The saloon windows are covered with custom Roman shades. The saloon transitions into an elegant galley that includes many brand name appliances.  Outboard is the Seaward LPG stove and oven.  The popular stainless steel double sink has a Grohe pull out type faucet for rinsing dishes. Refrigeration is provided by a Sub Zero below counter unit and a separate Sub Zero freezer.  There is a microwave oven as well. The optional forward galley opening portlight and trash compactor were both ordered.

GUEST STATEROOM:

Going forward and down the steps to the living areas the teak joinery is exquisite.  To port is the guest stateroom, which includes two bunk berths (an upper and lower).  The soles are teak with edge bound carpet.  In the guest stateroom the large outboard locker houses the Splendide clothes washer/dryer.  Access aft to the engine room is provided by a large gasketed and double dogged door (with the upgraded viewing window) that minimizes sound.  The guest stateroom is finished with off-white Formica laminate on the bulkheads and beautiful teak hull ceilings and teak trim.  This room also features two port lights and takes in additional fresh air from the forward dorade.

HALLWAY AND HEAD:

The hallway is teak soled and an easy passageway to transit.  Across the hallway from the guest stateroom is a large head that includes an electric head, Granite counter & sink and a separate shower stall.  The large shower is shrouded with a home-sized bi-fold shower door and inside an adjustable Grohe shower fixture and built in seat with teak slats makes this a great area to refresh.  The head area is off-white Formica with teak trim.  The toilet is the upgraded electric Groco K seawater model.  This entire enclosure is designed for simple maintenance and is ventilated by port lights and a shower exhaust blower.

MASTER STATEROOM:

Stepping up into the forward master stateroom you will find an ideal sleeping area with a large queen sized island berth.  This room is a testament to quality teak joinery with abundant lockers and drawers including two large hanging lockers.  The berth is hinged to lift up allowing access to a large storage area beneath, which includes a separate Lifeline 8-D battery that powers the windlass, and bow thruster and is wired in to the house bank.  You can easily get to the cavernous chain locker via a double door locker all the way forward.  For light and ventilation you have an overhead hatch, dorade vent and opening port lights on the hull sides.

PILOTHOUSE:

The pilothouse is directly above the hallway and boasts all of the necessities required for operating the vessel from this protected command station.  The windows are tempered glass and beautifully trimmed in teak. Outboard on each side of the pilothouse you can walk out to the Portuguese bridge through heavy Dutch doors.  The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes charcoal colored Formica instrument panels.  There is a lift up chart table to port.  “Maria Elena” has a comprehensive yet simple navigation and communications electronics package. The 40II features our next generation angled steering which has been upgraded here to a beautifully varnished teak wheel with stainless steel spokes. The bow thruster joystick and windlass remote toggle are ideally positioned.  “Maria Elena” also is equipped with a large Ritchie compass.

The pilothouse features beautifully varnished teak and the sole is also covered with microgroove teak.  Aft in the pilothouse is a comfortable bench seat with a nice teak table so that you can cruise comfortably sitting down – this is where the current owners have enjoyed eating their meals together.  Behind the seat is a cushioned watch berth.

WORKING AREAS:

ENGINE ROOM:

The engine room is located below the main saloon.  It is incredibly spacious (primarily due to the incorporated hull maintenance strakes) and access to all machinery and equipment is unimpeded.  The main engine room entrance is through a stout watertight door aft in the guest stateroom, and you can also enter from above via a hinged hatch forward to starboard in the salon sole. The reliable Lugger diesel is on centerline with two huge fiberglass fuel tanks installed outboard and insulated then finish trimmed with perforated aluminum sheeting.  You can easily get to both sides of the engine for inspection and access.  There is a specially designed fuel management system with a fuel supply reservoir, return manifold and upgraded dual Racor fuel filters are positioned conveniently to starboard of the main engine.  The fuel system (by adding the wing engine) has been plumbed to include a fuel transfer pump and polishing strainer so you can clean and transfer diesel fuel.  Aft and to port are several intake through hulls and strainers and the Yanmar wing engine with its’ own dedicated fuel day tank.  The engine room is also protected with a SeaFire fire suppression system.  The ABT TRAC active fin stabilizer oil reservoir is located starboard opposite the engine.  The floorboards are sealed with gel coat and there is an opening hatch above the main shaft stuffing box to make inspection of this vital area simple when underway.  The retooling of the engine room in the 40II’s is one of the most impressive upgrades

LAZARETTE:

Located beneath the aft deck cockpit, the lazarette is accessed via a massive fiberglass deck hatch.  The emergency tiller is mounted overhead.  The hydraulic steering is located aft.  There are several through hulls – all easy to get to.  This is a working space with no hidden areas and it a place that is easy to get around in for routine maintenance and inspection.

EXTERIOR:

DECK AREAS:

Her upgraded two-tone deck with contrasting gel coat colors between the smooth and diamond pattern non-skid are very easy on your eyes, particularly on a bright sunny day.  The Nordhavn 40II is very safe when on deck.  Even the narrow ledges outboard of the saloon have molded in non-skid for sure footing. The foredeck and boat deck feature stainless steel stanchions and lifelines.  The protection offered by the Portuguese bridge forward of the wheelhouse is an incredibly secure area for scanning the horizon while underway.  The cockpit is high walled and includes built in seating.   Excellent deck drains and freeing ports quickly shed any water that comes aboard.  Maria Elena opted for cockpit boarding doors on both sides, so you can come in to any marina with confidence that you can be assigned a slip with a tie up on either side.

Getting up aft to the boat deck is done on the starboard side hemmed in by protective stainless steel railing.  The boat deck is a very large area and easy to get around, and for the local cruising they have done there isn’t even a tender on board.  The top of the pilothouse houses the marvelous fly bridge.  With no exterior wood to maintain a thorough fresh water wash down with mild soap and a soft brush have kept “Maria Elena” as shiny as the day she was delivered.

COCKPIT:

The cockpit is a great place to relax with two molded in seats. The boat deck overhang only extends part way over the cockpit so that if you are fishing off the transom you have more room to swing back your rod to set a hook. Under the port seat is a sealed propane locker and there are boarding door to port AND starboard and one door aft to the molded in swim platform. The cockpit freshwater wash down makes it easy to maintain this area.

FOREDECK:

You get to the foredeck by going forward via the Portuguese bridge through a hinged molded fiberglass door on the starboard side.  Immediately forward of the Portuguese bridge there are two molded in deck boxes along centerline for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords, fenders, etc.  The stout stainless steel double anchor roller is backed by a rugged Maxwell electric windlass that can be operated by deck foot button and/or by a toggle in the pilothouse.  The anchor is a 75 lb. plow attached to 400’ of 3/8”chain.  There is a fresh water deck wash down spigot and the area immediately aft of the rollers is smartly designed with a recessed anchor well that drains overboard. The 40II has the classic Nordhavn horizontal stainless rails that extend the full length of the foredeck.

BOAT DECK:

Leaving the pilothouse and heading aft you go up a few steps to the boat deck.  This area is dominated by the mast and boom, which serves multiple purposes including; securing the dry stack exhaust, and operating as the dinghy davit.   The area is covered with a folding Bimini to make this a large shade deck for relaxation with your tender in the water.

FLYBRIDGE:

Above the pilothouse is a beautiful fly bridge with two helm chairs.  There is a hatch with access to the wheelhouse and the view from on top is tremendous.  For running on a nice day and for docking in tight quarters the fly bridge is a wonderful addition.  The nice “rumble seat” option was added and is fitted into the aft railing.  There is a folding Bimini top to keep you dry and shaded.

BROKERS COMMENTS:

“Maria Elena” provides an excellent opportunity and great value for anyone interested in purchasing an outstanding long-range passage maker set up for aggressive ocean passages or simple coastal cruising. This “like new” Nordhavn 40 II with flybridge and active fin stabilizers has been tuned up and “shaken down”.   Please request the photo CD that contains many additional, detailed digital photographs. This is a US Coast Guard documented vessel with US duty paid. The owner’s desire to move up to a larger Nordhavn due to the delightful experience of owning “Maria Elena” (their second Nordhavn 40II!)  presents the classic “late model, low hours, well maintained” scenario for the buyer who is ready to take off on their own adventures now.

The Nordhavn 40 II is a true full displacement trawler yacht with proven long-range capabilities. Record setting adventures with continuous running times of over two weeks have earned her legendary status as the ultimate couples passage maker. “Maria Elena” is hull number 61 of the series. She is just under one year old and quite contemporary considering that new build hull numbers are still being produced in the 60s.

Nordhavn 40s have crossed the Atlantic and Pacific, traveled both ends of the US coasts, the Great Lakes and the Caribbean.  In 2001 PAE/Nordhavn took hull 21 around the world setting a record as the smallest production trawler to circumnavigate the globe.  Upon completing this marvelous accomplishment the crew collaborated to determine improvements and upgrades that would make the 40 even better.  These ideas have been incorporated into the 40II, which is built by our state of the art shipyard located in Xiamen, China.

Since Maria Elena was registered under its own LLC (limited liability corporation) there are potential tax advantages, which could lead to tremendous savings. Please consult with your tax advisor to see how this may effect your purchase.
