OVERVIEW:
The Nordhavn 50 is a venerable model in the Nordhavn line with a very attractive look and profile that is favored by many. Prime Time is a very desirable flybridge model. She has the Nordhavn bulbous bow and the optional three-stateroom layout, featuring two sleeping cabins forward that share the forward guest head.
The hull was painted “Nordhavn Gray” in 2006, and has very nice gloss. In general, a linear polyurethane finish is a custom finish with color and gloss retention more durable than gelcoat.
Together with the proven transoceanic capability of the Nordhavn 50, Prime Time’s specifications make her a great family cruising yacht well suited for cruising Alaska and the Northwest, as well as warmer regions. The seasoning of such a durable boat along with the accumulation of very serviceable equipment makes Prime Time a very attractive buy on the brokerage market.
Owners’ Comments:
In the process of looking for a boat, we considered many others in the trawler class. The attributes of the Nordhavn 50 that appealed to us included the feeling of solidity and sturdiness, the wonderful view from the pilothouse, the ability to see over the bow from the flybridge, the twin staterooms – especially on those excursion with just a bunch of guys – although we could also accommodate two other couples, and the direct access to the master stateroom from the galley and salon area.
Some of the ideas that we incorporated into the layout that worked very well for us were: the two refrigerators- one in the galley and one in the starboard side of the salon where we could keep drinks and other handy items so guest could help themselves, a nice big chest freezer in the pilothouse, our wet locker design just inside the aft salon door (which was subsequently built into other 50’s), and the extended rigid frame cover over the cockpit – a perfect addition for year around use in the Northwest.
Interior Layout - General:
Prime Time has the popular asymmetrical layout wherein the interior space in the salon and galley benefits from the port cabin side extending to the port rail.
Tour -
Enter the salon through the cockpit/aft salon door. The dinette table and settee are to port, with a U-Line icemaker at the forward end of the settee.
To starboard just inside the aft door is a locker for convenient jacket storage. Just forward to starboard is a “Stressless” Ekornes chair and foot stool. Forward of that is cabinetry that provides storage and houses the second Sub-zero refrigerator.
At the forward end of the salon to port is the galley with generous counter space, a double bowl sink comfortably located at the outboard corner of the galley, and lots of drawer and locker storage. The terraced galley counter with two bar stools make is great for casual dining. The raised section blocks the view of dishes on the work counter from the dining area.
Just to starboard of the galley and down a few steps is direct access to the master stateroom. The engine room access door is in the aft bulkhead of the master stateroom. The master has an athwartship double bed with hanging lockers fore and aft, drawer storage under and beside the bed, and a large dressing mirror on the forward bulkhead.
Access to the master head with its separate stall shower, is to starboard inside the master stateroom.
To starboard and outboard of the master cabin steps, are steps up to the pilothouse. The pilothouse steering station has an impressive electronics console forward of the helm chair. Aft of the helm chair are a large settee and dinette table, making it a comfortable gathering area underway. There are pilothouse doors port and starboard for deck access.
Forward and to starboard in the pilothouse are steps down to the forward door of the master stateroom, and access to the port and starboard guest staterooms. Each of the two staterooms has over and under bunks. Both staterooms have access to the guest head forward.
Deck Layout - General:
The transom has a very useful swim step – with a custom extension - and transom door to the cockpit. From the cockpit there is ladder access to the boat deck. There is access to the foredeck via the starboard side deck. There is a boarding door in the bulwark of the starboard side deck about halfway forward. At the forward end of the sidedeck are steps up to the pilothouse doors, Portuguese bridge, and foredeck.
The foredeck is a well-designed working surface. Just forward of the Portuguese bridge is a storage locker for lines and electrical cords among other gear. All the way forward is the ground tackle handling area, where the windlass and anchor roller channels are situated in an area of the deck that is designed to contain mud and debris. All decks drain to the waterline to prevent streaking of the hull with residue.
Following the Portuguese bridge to port allows access to the port pilothouse door and steps up for access to the boat deck from forward. On the boat deck are the tender and davit. There is a lot of room on the boat deck for additional deck box storage and lounging.
