“Sea Once” is quite simply one of the finest Nordhavn 46’s ever built. Ordered new with several specific requests by an accomplished yachtsman who wanted the perfect family boat for getaways while continuing his career as a physician, she’s been a great cruising platform for three sets of owners and now is available for immediate delivery.

Trying to describe the importance of the Nordhavn 46 design to long range trawler cruisers is comparable to the contribution Henry Ford’s Model T made to popularizing the concept of the automobile…the exploding world cruising market would not be where it is today if PAE/Nordhavn hadn’t taken a chance with a bold new 46’ design in 1998 and introduced a production model long range trawler that revolutionized the way ALL cruisers (sail and power) view passage making. The 46 design opened up EVERY horizon to adventurers and is still one of the most popular full displacement power yacht s ever built.

“Sea Once” is a rare flybridge model (less than a dozen of the 80 hulls built were ordered with the flybridge option) and she is hull 71 in the series, a 2000 year qualifying her as a classic late model offering that was built during the peak hey day of construction at the crest of demand. She is the original layout design with master stateroom aft (amidships) and guest stateroom forward.

With 70 hulls built prior the lessons learned on layout, equipment and features provided an outstanding building opportunity and “Sea Once” boa sts several very important features that are not available on many 46s:

  • Flybridge
  • Fiberglass fuel tanks
  • Fiberglass engine room
  • Tinned copper wiring

There is certain awareness in the cruising community that the Nordhavn 46 might have the prettiest lines of any trawler afloat. Her performance pedigree is unquestioned with a half dozen circumnavigations and significant ocean crossings literally all over the world. “Sea Once” has just completed a major retrofit and upgrade of systems including a service stop with Yacht Tech in Florida (Dr. Nordhavn – James Knight) who gave her a clean bill of health. The sudden and unexpected death of her owner in mid-June, just having readied her for an extensive summer cruising itinerary along the eastern seaboard, creates a great opportunity for you if you missed out on “Sea Once” earlier this year when she was first put on the market. And we can safely say that she is in better shape now than ever before, in turn key ready to go condition and stationed at the Nordhavn sales docks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island – come take her away and go down east!

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT

Entering the salon through the aft sliding door from the cockpit you will be quite pleased with the warm teak interior. A custom dinette settee is to port, and a built in TV locker forward to starboard with a nice reclining chair. A galley counter athwartship to port divides the galley work area from the salon.

The galley is entered into just forward of the dry stack column and makes a wonder working kitchen underway with its’ U-shaped layout. Steps at the starboard forward end of the salon lead up to the pilothouse and there is a separate set of steps just off the galley that leads directly down to the master stateroom.

The pilothouse is just above the master. There is a nice built in leather stool that serves as the captains seat and provides great access to the elaborate instrument console which houses a comprehensive selection of electronics. Just behind is a raised bench with table which offers a comfortable gathering place while underway. A pilot berth is above and aft of the settee backrest.

A steep set of steps leads down to the staterooms. The guest stateroom is forward and the master is aft, both have their own private heads with showers. Each stateroom is complete with a large sleeping berth and abundant lockers and drawers, plus nice ventilation.

The engine room is accessed from the master stateroom and includes the main engine on centerline along with the generator and wing engine and all nicely run and labeled fuel lines and plumbing.

Back on deck the cockpit extends to a forward starboard side deck (covered) with steps up to the Portuguese bridge. An uncluttered foredeck makes anchoring easy and you head back around aft to the boat deck and flybridge.

MAIN SALON

The main salon is beautifully done in teak and includes classic teak and spruce soles. Aft to starboard is a custom wet locker that has also doubled as a fishing rod storage area. To starboard is an 18” TV housed in a beautiful console with tambour doors and a nice recliner chair to make life aboard even more like home.

To port is a sumptuous L shaped wrap around settee covered with leather and including storage under. The teak dinette is a high/low dining/coffee table design that is elegant and practical. The saloon area to port is long enough for an adult to sleep in one of those rough passages when the going gets tough. Custom roman shade blinds complement the interior.

The saloon transitions into the galley and also forward provides two sets of steps, one up to the pilothouse, the other down to the master stateroom. Note: there are bug screens installed on the inside of all exterior doors.

GALLEY

The galley adjoins the saloon and allows for a very convivial relationship between preparing food and serving it. There are two Sub Zero appliances on the forward counter with storage lockers above (and a clever pass through hatch that allows transfer to the crew in the pilothouse). Outboard is a Force 10 stove with a large convection microwave above. The aft counter includes a large deep single sink. The counter tops are covered with Corian. Organized storage includes an overhead locker over the galley counter and several below. A complete set of plates, mugs, glasses, tableware, kitchen utensils, etc., fill the lockers and drawers and stay with the boat. One special highlight is the “Life is Good” neon sign! A full complement of appliances includes:

  • Sub-Zero refrigerator
  • Sub-Zero freezer with ice maker
  • Force-10 LPG stove and oven (propane unit)
  • GE Convection microwave oven
  • Garbage disposal
  • Broan trash compactor
  • Coffee maker – 12 cup under counter model

MASTER STATEROOM – AMIDSHIPS

“Sea Once” was built for long range cruising and the master stateroom amidships layout is the preferred arrangement for rough weather offshore. She has been detailed with white laminate on the bulkheads and teak trim, a graceful touch that provides a lightness and openness. The bed is athwarthships with a custom mattress and you can enter the master aft from the saloon or forward from the pilothouse stairs. The engine room door is on the aft bulkhead and features a viewing port.

There is plenty of organized storage in lockers and drawers throughout the master. The head is located to starboard and has a nice toilet, sink and shower.

There is a TV mounted forward on the starboard side and the soles are teak and spruce. Hanging locker, book shelves and drawers are provided for storage. Portlights and overhead hatches for ventilation. All the way forward is a the guest head and shower, which is finished in white laminate and gelcoat.

PILOTHOUSE

The pilothouse forward console area includes a lot of surface area for the electronics array. A bench seat with table aft of the control console provides comfortable seating for crew who can “back seat drive” while underway. A pilot berth is up and aft of the settee. The pilot berth pulls out into a double.

This is a beautiful teak room with gray laminate panels and a light white overhead. The visibility is outstanding and all of the electronics are placed for convenient operation. The helm is a stainless steel destroyer wheel and the swivel stool seat is a very nice touch.

Going forward to the staterooms you will find separate Asko clothes washer and Asko clothes dryers mounted side by side outboard to starboard in the stairway.

BROKERS COMMENTS:

“Sea Once” is an exceptional Nordhavn 46. The listing brokers spent considerable time helping find and buy her and after the purchase “Sea Once” had a string of minor upgrades and repairs (ex: re-built bow thruster) to make her like new and ready for sea. To consider the purchase of a vessel like a Nordhavn 46, which can literally take you anywhere in the world, there are three key “life ingredients” that must come into alignment to create the right balance of – time, health and money. This story has a sad current chapter, after finding the boat of his dreams, upgrading and outfitting and finally getting everything “perfect”, the owner suddenly passed away while in port and aboard – after only three short months of ownership. The family has asked Nordhavn to help them find a new owner who will take “Sea Once” back out to sea and use her for her intended purpose – to follow dreams and deliver her crew safely and comfortably to any destination in range. She is located at our sales docks in Portsmouth, RI, priced fairly and an exceptional value – just looking for you to start writing the next chapter…
