INTRODUCTION:

“Southern Star” is a shining example of a beautifully maintained Nordhavn that has been exceptionally outfitted and impeccably maintained. She was purchased by her current New Zealand owners when she was offered for sale a couple of years ago in Portland, OR. The listing broker had the pleasure of helping bring her south to Ensenada, Mexico where she was loaded on Dockwise Yacht Transport to be ferried home. During this 5 day run south there were three straight days in gale force winds, which provided an incredible confidence boost to the entire crew with the ease in which “Southern Star” handled the seas. Quite simply this experience at sea allows for an unequivocal endorsement of this vessel as one of the finest trawlers ever produced. This is the popular two stateroom layout with built in office desk and she is a very well equipped boat that is set up to cross oceans and venture on extended long range cruises. All of the popular factory options were selected and many second owner improvements have been undertaken. Each system has been thoroughly exercised and ‘broken in’ so she should be trouble free from the moment you take off. With her prominent upgraded features – flybridge with FRP stack and davit, she could easily fool you from a distance because she looks very similar to a Nordhavn 55!

With close to sixty Nordhavn 47s now launched, ‘Southern Star’ represents a special situation where you can buy a well maintained late model that is also conveniently located at the starting point for South Pacific cruising at a price well below replacement cost of new. The range of the Nordhavn 47 has already been proven with three trans-Atlantic crossings (4708 which completed the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally and the returned on her own bottom) and 4732 which led the fleet across the Atlantic last spring. And one trans-Pacific crossing (4702 which completed a nearly 3,000 mile passage from Mexico to the Marquesas and went on to Australia where she was sold so her owner could purchase a new Nordhavn 55).

“Southern Star” truly boasts all of the comforts of home. She is pristine and priced competitively. She is located down under and has current New Zealand registration with customs, duty and goods services tax paid.

Contact your Nordhavn salesman for more details and to schedule an appointment to view her.

“SOUTHERN STAR” – HULL NUMBER 18, AN EXCEPTIONAL NORDHAVN 47: The Nordhavn 47 design has already captured a prestigious place in the trawler world garnering multiple accolades from major boating magazines for her quiet ride and exceptional passage making attributes – particularly impressive is her proven long-range hull design, extremely efficient layout and generous engine room.

“Southern Star” has spent her last two years exploring the rugged New Zealand coast. Plans are in place for her to cross the Tasman later this year so that she can explore what Australia has to offer. All systems have been tested in a variety of conditions. To replace “Southern Star” as a new boat and import her with duty and taxes paid into New Zealand the comparable retail pricing would exceed - $US 1,650,000.00! “Southern Star” is an exclusive listing by Nordhavn – there is no better way to buy a brokerage yacht than directly from the people responsible for building her in the first place!

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:
MAIN SALOON AND GALLEY:
Entering the saloon your first impression will be one of awe. The teak joinery is beautiful and is well complimented by the granite countertops and teak and spruce sole. This single level room merges a spacious saloon with an extremely functional galley making it easy to prepare, cook and serve meals and refreshments while enjoying the company of guests – there is plenty of room to stand or sit while conversing. The saloon features a permanent teak dinette table to starboard with L-shaped settee (abundant storage beneath). To port is another settee with storage under as well. Any place you sit in the saloon provides a great view of your outside surroundings due to numerous teak framed windows.

The saloon transitions into an elegant galley that includes many brand name appliances. One noticeable feature is the double basin corner sink, which maximizes space for the rest of the galley. The faucet is a pull out type for rinsing dishes, made by Grohe. The commercial grade propane Thermador range has four burners and a convection oven, truly an impressive modern home appliance, and it is properly trimmed with a stainless retainer to secure pots and pans while cooking underway. The granite counter tops extend up along the forward bulkhead to provide a regal touch to the cooking area. There is excellent ventilation in the galley provided by an opening port light outboard. A large GE microwave with exhaust blower is directly above the stove. There are plenty of overhead and under counter lockers for storing everything you need in a proper seagoing galley. On the aft galley counter a Broan trash compactor with teak trim has been installed. This yacht even features a Meile dishwasher! Forward and towards centerline is a full sized Sub Zero refrigerator with a large teak door. Underneath are two Sub Zero freezer drawers for cold storage and the bottom drawer includes an icemaker.

Next to the refrigerator are two deep pantry lockers with adjustable shelves. Forward to starboard in the saloon is a full size louvered door, which conceals two beautiful Meile appliances – a clothes washer and a separate clothes dryer.

At the forward end of the saloon you ascend a flight of five steps to arrive in the wheelhouse where all of the ships navigation and operational activities are coordinated.

PILOTHOUSE:
The command center of the Nordhavn 47 is the elevated pilothouse where you are afforded a spectacular view of your surroundings. The windows are all commercial strength and quality built by Diamond Sea/Glaze. Forward visibility is excellent through four large 12mm thick tempered glass panes. The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes charcoal colored Formica instrument panels. The overhead console contains an impressive collection of instruments. At the dash area there are three built in instrument pods, which stretch across the forward counter of the wheelhouse and have been logically organized with the ships Nav/Com electronics. On the flat horizontal dash the electronic main engine MMC single lever shift control is easy to reach, as are the joysticks for the bow and stern thrusters.

The overhead is finished in white Majilite vinyl penetrated by Cantalupi lights – a rich treatment that is carried through out this yacht to achieve a brilliant lighting arrangement. There is also a Lewmar opening hatch with the upgraded roller shade/screen covering and two dorade vents provide additional air circulation.

Secured in the center of the control area is a beautiful Stidd helm chair with the upgraded chrome package. Captaining “Southern Star” from this helm chair truly provides a feeling of piloting a very large yacht – you have a clear view of the outside world (while enjoying the comfort and protection of being inside the pilothouse) and equally as important you can easily do a visual check on all of the yachts electronics and machinery control panels. The pilothouse is air-conditioned and there is a Kabola heater with built in defrosters for optimum climate control supplying touch pad comfort whether at anchor or underway.

The helm dash features a vertically mounted stainless steel destroyer wheel. The main engine, wing engine and generator control panels are positioned in the overhead console so that they can be easily seen. There is an innovative electronics island that extends aft from the starboard side of the dash area and houses all of the, DC and AC breakers, the air conditioning select breakers and more. All of the electrical panels are clearly labeled and the current flow gauges are easy to read digital displays. All of the ships electrical distribution panels are hinged for access to wiring and each wire is labeled.

All the way aft in the wheelhouse is a watch berth – a very large single bed. Just forward of the berth is a nice settee bench fronted by a permanent fixed teak table where captain and crew have many times enjoyed lunch or just relaxed while having a cup of coffee. The settee includes stowage underneath; there are two slide out chart drawers directly below the foot landing. Another large locker is located aft by the galley stairs and this has been specially equipped with a 120V duplex outlet.

A wet hanging locker is aft outboard to starboard and this locker, which borders the galley stairs, also includes a flat top surface that has a bookshelf and plenty of room for stowing accessories.

The pilothouse includes two Dutch doors – port and starboard – which lead out onto the Portuguese bridge. Outside you can go up and aft to port to the boat deck and flybridge, or out the starboard door make a quick turn to the foredeck or aft to walk along the covered side deck on your way to the cockpit.

Forward stairway:
The wheelhouse has a nicely curved staircase forward that leads to the staterooms. This stairwell is beautifully varnished teak with a stainless steel handrail and grooved steps for good traction. The stairwell includes lockers outboard to starboard (books, manuals and the computer tower are tucked away) and also includes a separate Sub Zero freezer. The steps at the base of the stairway lift up for access to the gray water holding tank manual back up pump.

The Forward living areas:

GUEST STATEROOM:
All the way forward in the boat is one of the most impressive locations aboard. The guest stateroom looks like it was designed for an NBA player, most people cannot reach the overhead with their hands. This incredibly spacious room could easily be confused as a master stateroom.
There is a large double bunk to port with drawers below and a nice hidden pipe berth above it for sleeping an extra crew in a pinch. The lower berth is fitted with a custom HMC inner spring mattress.

Forward is a raised section that includes a generous head with teak and spruce floors and a large shower with bi-fold door. The sink has a generous surface area and there are plenty of storage lockers for personal effects. The tile flooring of the head incorporates a lift up hatch to give you access to the forward bilge area including a way to service the bow thruster.

In the forward area of the stateroom are two large, lighted and camphor lined hanging lockers on both sides as well as some extra storage lockers mounted up high and outboard on each side.

To starboard in the guest stateroom is an impressive “office sized” desk with a swing out chair. The popularity of having a sensible working area like this has proven to be a huge selling feature in the design of the Nordhavn 47. Setting this up as a shipboard office to work, or get caught up on emails is an extremely practical use of space.

A separate air-conditioning digital control pad allows adjustment of temperature. There are two overhead outboard hatches in the center of the room and in the top of the shower. There are two large oval port lights in each side of the hull and even the circular area aft that incorporates the back of the Portuguese bridge has been fitted with two round port lights for protected air flow while underway. There is plenty of light and available ventilation in this magnificent forward area.

MASTER STATEROOM:
The master is located amidships and the large queen sized island berth runs fore and aft for maximum comfort while underway. The master berth was upgraded to include a specially ordered HMC inner spring hinged mattress. The headroom is 6’6”+ and this stateroom is another area where the lavish teak joinery is stunning. As you enter facing aft you will see a nice built in teak bookshelf above the bed. To port is a full length hanging locker with sliding doors that is camphor lined and lighted. Facing aft to starboard of the bed you will see the full height door that provides access to the engine room (specially upgraded to a beautiful teak face). Stepping inside the stateroom you will also appreciate the large hanging locker forward to port as well as the lower hanging locker outboard and the forward bulkhead bureau with storage. There are port lights outboard to port and the master stateroom is air-conditioned. A special blower provides fresh air via an intake from the Portuguese bridge. This is a very quiet place on the boat (especially while underway!) and a nice reclusive area to read or sleep.

The master connects to a large head to starboard, which includes a granite counter and sink and a separate shower stall – large enough for two! The shower includes Grohe shower fixtures. The head area is molded fiberglass. The sole is beautifully varnished Teak and Spruce – this entire enclosure is designed for simple maintenance and is ventilated by port lights and a shower exhaust blower.

WORKING AREAS:

ENGINE ROOM:
The engine room is located below the main saloon and is primarily accessed through the full height door in the aft end of the master stateroom. You can also enter via the aft door connecting the lazarette with the engine room and you can get into the engine room through the removable section of the saloon. Any way you get there you will be impressed with the 6’ plus headroom around the engine – created by Nordhavns signature “maintenance strakes”. The dry stack exhaust is cleanly routed up and away wrapped in a custom fit thermal jacket and the powerful Lugger main engine is perfectly installed on centerline and skirted by a nice stainless steel cage to give you extra support while you are conducting inspections – you can get to every part of the main engine.

Spending time in this engine room is a joy! This is an inviting work area that is well lit by DC dome lights and sealed AC florescent bulbs throughout. And, the 47 ER is exceptionally well layed out. One of Nordhavns truly innovative passage-making developments is the simplification of all ships systems; specifically the fuel system and its relationship with the main engine featuring a keel cooled dry stack exhaust. This is a reliable and dependable performance package designed for uninterrupted continuous duty for days on end. You can use every gallon of diesel aboard and there is a built in fuel transfer and polishing system to keep your fuel oil fresh. The entire engine room is insulated with lead sound deadening foam and shrouded with perforated aluminum sheeting for crisp, clean professional look. All of the valves for fuel lines are clearly labeled and easily accessed. In fact, “Southern Star” is one of the later editions that has the optimized fuel manifold alcove forward and hinged lid Racor locker. The through hulls are also clearly identified and easy to get to. The amount of elbowroom and open space in this area makes it a simple task to inspect the oil level of the generator and wing engine. If you smell or see something that doesn’t seem right you have immediate access to track down what is going on without having to do any disassemble anything.

“Southern Star’s” engine room features a Yanmar wing engine to port – with its’ own day tank of fuel, and a 12kW Northern Lights generator to starboard. The ABT TRAC stabilizer fins are accessible as well as that systems hydraulic reservoir. “Southern Star” also has the optional Reverso oil change system for easy evacuation of the main, wing and generator– a key to ensuring machinery longevity. The floorboards are all fiberglass and there is minimal use of wood in the engine room. Inspecting the stuffing box is a cinch. Engine room checks while underway are a highlight, not a dreaded chore.

There is also a door aft for getting into the lazarette – this is particularly helpful if you are in big stormy seas and need to check on your steering – you could easily enter the lazarette without exposing yourself or your ship to the elements by having to open the cockpit hatch.

Probably a book could be written about the Nordhavn 47 engine room alone, the best thing to do is get aboard and see for yourself. And perhaps the best attribute of all is that the sound level that emanates from the Nordhavn 47 engine room has been applauded by every magazine that has reviewed her - to most editors the Nordhavn 47 is the quietest boat afloat!

LAZARETTE:
Located beneath the aft deck cockpit, the lazarette is accessed via a massive fiberglass deck hatch. There is a stainless steel ladder to easily get down inside. The hydraulic steering is located aft and there is also an emergency tiller mounted. There are several through hulls – all easy to get to. “Southern Star” has been pre-plumbed for a water maker. The Trace inverter/battery charger is located in the lazarette too. This lazarette is a working space that is easy to get around in for routine maintenance and inspection.

EXTERIOR:
DECK AREAS:

The two-tone deck with contrasting gel coat colors between the smooth and diamond pattern non-skid are very easy on your eyes, particularly on a bright sunny day. The Nordhavn 47 is very safe when on deck. The foredeck and boat deck feature stainless steel stanchions and lifelines. The protection offered by the Portuguese bridge forward of the wheelhouse is an incredibly secure area for scanning the horizon while underway. The cockpit is high walled to keep the seas out and the waterline deck area has built in freeing ports to quickly shed any boarding seas. The four Lewmar hatches are covered in canvas. The dinghy and outboard are mounted on the boat deck. Getting up aft to the boat deck is done on the port side securely hemmed in by protective stainless steel railing. The boat deck is a very large area and easy to get around – even when the dinghy is stowed on deck! The top of the pilothouse has been reserved for installation of various electronics antennas. With the beautifully varnished stern cap rail as the only exterior wood to maintain a thorough fresh water wash down with mild soap and a soft brush have kept “Southern Star” as shiny as the day she was delivered.

COCKPIT:
This cockpit is a great place to Barbeque or to just relax when at anchor. The fiberglass boat deck overhang only extends part way over the cockpit, but on “Southern Star” a custom stainless steel cockpit shade has been installed to make this a cool and dry place to relax. Behind the port aft locker is a sealed propane locker that is vented overboard and contains three braced aluminum tanks. There is a boarding door to starboard along the side deck and one aft to the swim platform. The swim platform includes a stainless steel swim ladder. The cockpit freshwater wash down makes it easy to maintain this area and there is a built in Scanvik hot and cold freshwater shower. Extra stainless steel handrails have been installed to make moving about easier. And a special stern shore power station has been incorporated aft to starboard to make plugging in more convenient when backing in to a slip.

FOREDECK:
You get to the foredeck by going forward via the Portuguese bridge through a hinged molded fiberglass door on the starboard side. Immediately forward of the Portuguese bridge there is a large molded in deck box along centerline for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords, fenders, etc. The stout stainless steel double anchor roller is backed by a rugged Maxwell electric windlass that can be operated by deck foot button and/or by a toggle in the pilothouse. The anchor is a 165 lb. Rocna next generation anchor and is attached to 400’ of 3/8” BBB chain. There is a fresh water deck wash down spigot and the area immediately aft of the rollers is smartly designed with a recessed anchor well that drains overboard. The standard shore power connections are located forward to port and include a 30-Amp house, 50-Amp house and 50-Amp air conditioning connection.

BOAT DECK:
Leaving the pilothouse and heading aft along the port side you go up a few steps to the boat deck. This area is fronted by the gracefully sculpted fiberglass dry stack exhaust enclosure that features mounting wings and a radar pod. The boat deck is equipped with the ships tender, a 12’ Deluxe Rendova console steering rigid bottom inflatable dinghy with a Yamaha 40 hp mounted and secured. The dinghy includes comfortable seating, a lifting harness, Icom VHF radio and permanent 110V battery charger with waterproof receptacle. An optional fresh water wash down spigot was specified to make rinsing the dinghy and upper deck areas easy. The Steelhead davit is ideally situated on centerline for maximum utility. This is a hydraulic lift unit with proportional controls and allows for launching of the tender over either side or the transom. “Southern Star” is truly a second generation Nordhavn 47 which features a fiberglass dry stack enclosure that streamlines her appearance and adds a more “expedition yacht styling” to an already serious seagoing vessel. By eliminating the mast and boom the selection of paravanes for stabilization is eliminated as an option and a different method to launch your dinghy is required. “Southern Star” was the first Nordhavn to install a Steelhead davit (now a very popular option on many Nordhavns) and the old chore of dinghy handling using a clumsy mast and boom electric boom winch system has been simplified to a fun task that makes deploying and retrieving the ships skiff a snap. Mounted just below the outboard boat deck overhangs on both sides are two Forespar flopper stopper poles ready for quick deployment when you anchor out in a rough water moorage.

FLYBRIDGE:
The view from the flybridge of a Nordhavn 47 is breathtaking. The design feature of being built atop the wheelhouse affords commanding views in all directions and is an ideal place to run this ship while underway and an equally suitable location to unwind once you have arrived at your destination. The stainless steel Bimini frame with waterproof top provides a stylish cover to keep you dry when it rains and cool when the sun is out. Two Stidd helm chairs have been installed so captain and mate can travel as a pair and there is even a bench seat just aft of the swivel seats with a built in table. The primary electronics are duplicated up here and this is really the best place to command this yacht in all but the most extreme weather conditions.
