INTRODUCTION
Poco a Poco defines the classic Nordhavn 46 that has become a true modern day trawler legend. She is offered for sale by her original owner who has had a magnificent 12 year cruising life aboard and is now getting on in years where he can’t take off on longer trips as easily and has decided it would be best to sell the boat and let someone else enjoy new adventures.
PAE/Nordhavn took a chance with a bold new 46’ design in 1988 and introduced a production model long range trawler that revolutionized the way ALL cruisers (sail and power) view passage making. The 46 design opened up EVERY horizon to adventurers and is still one of the most popular full displacement power yachts ever built.
Poco a Poco (little by little) is hull 59 in the series (out of 82) so she is a late model offering that was built during the peak hey day of construction at the crest of demand. She is the “coastal” layout design – Plan B - with master stateroom forward – accessed from the galley level via a step down hallway and guest stateroom with double berth to port. There are two heads with showers so each stateroom has quite privacy. The interior boasts a beautiful teak wood finish with a touch of white laminate in the guest stateroom.
Poco a Poco was delivered to Long Beach, CA in August of 1998 and outfitted in Dana Point, CA. The day after Christmas in 1998 she departed for Mexico taking a leisurely cruise down the west coast with several lengthy stops on the way to Panama. From Panama she travelled to Isla Mujeres and then on to Brownsville, Texas where she has gone up and down the east coast up to Maine with no major problems ever encountered as she has shouldered heavy seas and high winds as expected. Her paravane stabilizers have kept her comfortable both underway and at anchor in rolling seas. In January of 2003 three air conditioning units were installed in Seabrook, Texas. In September of 2009 she was stored indoors at Maine Yacht Center and refitted with a new four blade propeller and a line cutter. At that time here current (new) Achilles RIB inflatable was also purchased.
There is certain awareness in the cruising community that the Nordhavn 46 might have the prettiest lines of any trawler afloat. Her performance pedigree is unquestioned with a half dozen circumnavigations and significant ocean crossings literally all over the world.
ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT
Entering the salon through the aft sliding door from the cockpit you will be quite pleased with the warm teak interior. A custom dinette settee is to port for meals and two comfortable chairs with a teak stand to port for reading and relaxing. The galley counter athwartship to port divides the galley work area from the salon.
The galley is entered into just forward of the dry stack column and makes a wonderful working kitchen underway with its’ U-shaped layout. Steps at the starboard forward end of the salon lead up to the pilothouse and there is a separate set of steps just off the galley that leads directly down to the stateroom passageway.
Going up three steps to the pilothouse you appreciate all of the practicality of an enclosed wheelhouse with magnificent visibility and all of the operational controls suitably positioned.
The pilothouse has everything you will want for extended practical sea travel including an elaborate instrument console which houses a comprehensive selection of electronics. Just behind is a raised bench with table which offers a comfortable gathering place while underway. A pilot berth is above and aft of the settee backrest.
Going down the steps from the galley to the staterooms you first arrive at the guest stateroom which is to port and then further forward the master island berth is situated. The two heads are located on the starboard side of the hull. Each stateroom is complete with a large sleeping berth and abundant lockers and drawers, plus nice ventilation.
The engine room is accessed from the guest stateroom and includes the main engine on centerline along with the generator to starboard and all nicely run and labeled fuel lines and plumbing.
There is a side boarding door to starboard and a built in swim step aft with an access door. To go forward you transition along the forward starboard side deck (covered) with steps up to the Portuguese bridge. An uncluttered foredeck makes anchoring easy. The boat deck is accessed from the port side of the pilothouse and the tender is hoisted by the mast and boom assembly which also supports the dry stack exhaust.
MAIN SALON
The main salon is beautifully done in teak and includes classic teak and spruce soles. To starboard are two comfortable swivel chairs with a centered cabinet for resting drinks and stereo storage.
To port is a sumptuous L shaped wrap around settee with storage underneath. The teak dinette is a high/low dining/coffee table folding leaf teak design that is elegant and practical as it can be easily moved to accommodate six peoples. Custom shade blinds complement the interior.
The saloon transitions into the galley and also forward provides two sets of steps, one up to the pilothouse, and the other down to the staterooms.
GALLEY
The galley adjoins the saloon and allows for a very convivial relationship between preparing food and serving it. There are two Sub Zero appliances on the forward counter with storage lockers above (and a clever pass through hatch that allows transfer to the crew in the pilothouse). Outboard is a Force 10 stove with a large convection microwave above. The aft counter includes a double basin sink. The counter tops are covered with upgraded Surrell. Organized storage includes lockers and drawers. The connectivity between the galley and saloon is very appealing for people preparing food to interact with those unwinding in the saloon. A complete set of plates, mugs, glasses, tableware, kitchen utensils, etc., fill the lockers and drawers and stay with the boat. A full complement of appliances includes:
-
Sub-Zero refrigerator
-
Sub-Zero freezer with ice maker
-
Force-10 LPG stove and oven (propane unit)

The chart table to starboard is built into the forward console and there is a flip up chart table shelf to port as well. A bench seat with table aft of the control console provides comfortable seating for crew who can “back seat drive” while underway. A pilot berth is up and aft of the settee and has a slide out extension to make it wider for two people.
