SATCHMO – HULL NUMBER 65, AN EXTRAORDINARY NORDHAVN 46!

The Nordhavn 46 was designed as an interpretation of the ideal long distance production powerboat outlined by Robert Beebe in his book, Voyaging Under Power – the bible for passage makers.  There is a certain awareness in the cruising community that the Nordhavn 46 might have the prettiest lines of any trawler afloat.  Certainly the 46’s  performance pedigree is unquestioned, with a half dozen circumnavigations and significant ocean crossings literally all over the world.  Satchmo is a sparkling gem of a 46, awaiting your appraisal.

Built in 2000, Satchmo is listed for sale by her second owners. You may already be familiar with this boat, as she was featured on the cover of the August 2000 issue of PassageMaker magazine – then known as Concerto. The original owner cruised her for three years before turning her over to her current owners.  They changed her name to Satchmo and took every step necessary to refine her into a loaded, redundant, long range passage maker for serious ocean crossings.

Satchmo was purchased primarily to participate in the 2004 NAR (Nordhavn Atlantic Rally) with a fleet of like minded adventurers.  She spent the next seven seasons cruising the Mediterranean, finally returning to her home in East Coast waters.

Satchmo features the plan B arrangement, with the master stateroom forward and steps down from the saloon to the interior hallway. This layout also makes for a larger pilothouse as there is no stairway forward.  All of the popular factory options have been selected and each system has been thoroughly exercised and “broken in” so she should be trouble free from the moment you take off.

The Nordhavn 46 model launched a revolution in production built fiberglass power boat long distance cruisers, and production halted with hull #82.  Satchmo is hull #65 and has the coveted fiberglass fuel tanks which were only installed on the last two dozen hulls. Satchmo boasts several very important features that are not available on many 46s:

  • Fiberglass fuel tanks

  • Fiberglass engine room

  • Tinned copper wiring

  • Upgraded Nordhavn 50 large engine room door

  • Upgraded next-boat size-up Naiad active fin stabilizers

Satchmo has been meticulously and professionally maintained, and constantly improved.  In fact, in the winter/spring of 2011 she was hauled out and had an extensive upgrade, refit, and maintenance inspection (to the tune of over $60,000.00).

Satchmo is offered for sale through the Nordhavn office in Stuart, FL.  Satchmo is a thoroughbred throughout and will delight you as you cast off for adventure to wherever you want to go!  Contact your Nordhavn sales representative to schedule an appointment to view her.

ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT—AN OVERVIEW

A sturdy sliding door permits entry into the lavish teak saloon.  The saloon and galley merge into a attractive area for dining, talking, or just relaxing.  A full-length settee, custom dining table, large entertainment center/bar, armchair, and bookshelves complete this bright and airy saloon.

The galley lies athwartship to port, with a U-shape layout.  Teak cabinetry, stainless appliances, abundant storage, and lots of counterspace in this galley take the “camping” out of boating.

Steps from the saloon lead up to the pilothouse; a separate set of steps leads down to the two staterooms, two heads, and engine room.

The pilothouse provides a comprehensive and redundant selection of electronics.  Just behind the instrument console is a raised bench with table which offers a comfortable gathering place while underway.  The pilot berth is above and aft of the settee backrest, and is typically used for cruising guides and related material.

The guest stateroom is aft and the master is forward; both have their own private heads with showers.   Each stateroom is complete with large sleeping accommodations and abundant lockers and drawers, plus excellent ventilation. Each stateroom has its own head.

Throughout the boat, teak reigns—gorgeous teak cabinets, teak walls, and teak and spruce soles. All fixtures on the interior were specified chrome/stainless for a more pleasing “silver” shiny look vs. the dull bronze feel of older trawlers.  The hallway incorporates a (separate!) clothes washer and dryer. The engine room is accessed from the guest stateroom and includes the main engine on centerline, along with the generator, wing engine, Naiad stabilizers, and watermaker.

Back on deck the cockpit extends to a forward starboard side deck (covered) with steps up to the Portuguese bridge.  An uncluttered foredeck makes anchoring easy.  The boat deck has the tender, life raft, and deck boxes. Two remote steering stations are located on the boat deck and in the cockpit.

And now the details . . . .

MAIN SALOON

The most popular central living area has great visibility to the outside world.  The main saloon is beautifully done in teak and includes classic teak and spruce soles.  To port is a large L-shaped wrap around settee which includes valuable storage under and behind. It is also long enough for an adult to sleep on during a rough passage. The factory salon table was deleted and a custom cherry wood drop-leaf dining table was installed that is elegant and practical; custom screw bolts secure it for heavy weather.

To starboard, a teak entertainment cabinet with built-in bar, a comfortable armchair, and a large bookcase with fiddles make life aboard even more like home. There is a floor hatch to the engine room for daily access, and four lift-up floor sections to provide full access to the engine room. Zoned air conditioning (1 of 3) is supplemented with two 12V wall mounted fans. Custom wooden blinds complement the interior.

The saloon transitions into the galley to port, and forward there are two sets of steps: one up to the pilothouse, the other down to the hallway which leads to the living quarters.

  • Custom cherry wood dining table

  • Extra locker door to access aft port corner of galley

  • Entertainment/bar in aft starboard corner of saloon

  • Teak wood mount for slim TV

  • Teak panel added to kitchen countertop to separate saloon area from galley areaHandsome brass Weems and Plath pressure and time instruments over passageway entrance

GALLEY

The galley adjoins the saloon, allowing for easy conversation while preparing meals. Located forward to port, the galley has a good-looking combination of teak cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and black Corian countertops.  Just added in 2011, Satchmo boasts two Kitchenaid 2-drawer  refrigerator/freezer units (for a total of 4 roomy drawers), with icemakers and welcome energy efficiency. Outboard is a gimbaled Seaward electric stove and a large GE convection microwave above. The aft counter includes a large deep single sink.  There are plenty of cabinets and drawers for storing everything you need in a proper seagoing galley.  A full set of plates, mugs, glasses, tableware, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, and pots and pans stay with the boat.

A full complement of appliances and features includes:

  • Two new (2011) stainless steel Kitchenaid 2-drawer refrigerator/freezers; the top drawer on each unit is a refrigerator, and the bottom drawer on each is a freezer with ice-maker. Energy efficient. Kitchenaid model KDDC24C.

  • Extra lift-top hinged storage cabinet with light

  • Added overhead locker in galley

  • Single bowl stainless steel sink

  • Seaward 220V stove and oven – gimbaled (electric unit)

  • GE Convection / microwave oven

  • Broan trash compactor

HALLWAY

Satchmo has a very pleasing layout that minimizes stairs (an improvement over earlier 46’s).  The saloon stairs lead forward to the lower hallway, which accesses both heads and both staterooms.  In the lower hallway you also will find a separate dryer stacked over a separate washer, both hidden behind nice teak doors.

  • Asko Clothes Washer

  • Asko Clothes Dryer

GUEST STATEROOM – AFT

The guest stateroom, located aft to port, has its private entrance from the hallway. This area is beautifully finished in varnished teak and features two full length bunk beds. The soles are teak and spruce. A hanging locker and several drawers are provided for storage.  There is also a built-in desk with two filing drawers, and above it a bookcase with fiddles.  The owners added a second bookcase with fiddles, designed to be easily removed if the washer or  dryer ever needs to be serviced. There are two portholes for ventilation.

  • Upgraded access door to engine room

  • 12 v ventilation fan

  • Standard bookshelf with fiddles above desk

  • Custom bookcase with fiddles, easily removed

  • Custom mattresses with upholstery fabric for good looks when not sheeted

GUEST HEAD

Outboard on the starboard side is the guest head and shower, which is finished in white laminate and gelcoat.

  • White Surrell counter top with undermount sink, four drawers

  • Raritan “Marine Elegance” electric seawater toilet, installed summer 2010 with new hoses

  • Mirrored medicine cabinet with large storage area behind and a second large locker

  • Grohe sink faucet

  • Shower with Grohe fixtures, bench, and 2 storage compartments

  • 12V wall-mounted fan

  • Exhaust fan

  • Bright Cantalupi lighting

MASTER STATEROOM – FORWARD

The large, light and airy master stateroom is all the way forward. It has a custom queen-size mattress on a center island. This is an ideal location to sleep, especially at anchor when the three overhead hatches catch every breeze. Abundant storage is supplied by two large hanging lockers, five wall lockers, four drawers under the foot of the bed, a dresser with eight drawers, linen storage at the head of the bed, an upholstered settee to port, and additional storage both behind and under the settee. This stateroom is finished beautifully in teak.

  • Queen bunk with custom HMC mattress

  • Three ceiling hatches for great ventilation. Each ceiling hatch is also equipped with a sliding insect screen and a sliding sun shade; newly installed in 2011

  • Additional ventilation from portholes and wall-mounted 12v fans.

  • Double hanging clothes lockers

MASTER HEAD

The master stateroom’s cabin door closes off the entire forward area, making the head a true ensuite arrangement.  There is a Vacuflush toilet and comfortable shower stall as well as a sink, counter and medicine cabinet.

  • White Surrell counter top with undermount sink including 4 drawers,

  • Grohe sink faucet

  • Mirrored medicine locker with a large storage area behind and a second locker

  • Sealand Vacuflush fresh water toilet Model 506, freshwater; rebuilt in 2011, including new hoses, evacuation tank, and pump.

  • Separate shower stall with seat and two storage lockers

  • Shower with Grohe fixtures, bench, and 2 storage compartments; new hoses in 2011

  • 2 opening ports

  • 12v wall-mounted fan

  • Exhaust fan

  • On/off switch for Vacuflush pump

  • On/off switch for Sealand overboard pump

  • Bright Cantalupi lighting

PILOTHOUSE

The command center of the Nordhavn 46 is the elevated pilothouse. This is a pilothouse forward design – great for looking ahead and seeing what is happening. The windows are all commercial strength and quality with beautiful teak frames. The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes charcoal instrument panels.  The overhead console contains a truly comprehensive and impressive array of instruments.  The helm is a stainless steel destroyer wheel, with an added stainless speedball.

There is a bench seat upholstered settee with a table in front of it. The current owners shortened the table in 2007, to make it easier for guests to get in and out of the settee on port side.

The pilothouse includes two sliding doors – port and starboard – which lead out onto the Portuguese bridge.  Outside to port you can go up and aft to the boat deck, or out the starboard door make a quick turn to the foredeck or aft to walk along the covered side deck on your way to the cockpit.

On the flat horizontal dash the main engine MMC electronic controls and wing engine Morse shift controls are easy to reach, as is the joystick for the bow thruster.  The overhead is finished in white Majilite vinyl penetrated by Cantalupi lights. The pilothouse is air conditioned with reverse cycle heating for optimum climate control supplying touch pad comfort whether at anchor or underway.

  • Lewmar hatch installed centerline on pilothouse top

  • Fold-down steering bench

  • Pilothouse settee seat special ordered to be 20" deep on seat bottom

  • Hanging locker, with custom stainless 20” pipe for fast, spill-free fueling on deck

  • Two 12V fans

  • Steps into pilothouse modified to double as storage with hinged step-tops, as are the steps into the master stateroom

Because Satchmo was outfitted for long range cruising, the navigation and communications

equipment is extensive as should be expected.  At the dash area all of controls have been

logically organized for visibility and access. See details that follow for a complete

electronics and electrical controls inventory.

DECK AREAS OVERVIEW

The two-tone deck, with contrasting white and light grey gel coat on the smooth and diamond pattern non-skid, is easy on the eyes, particularly on a bright sunny day.  More importantly, the Nordhavn 46 is built to be safe when on deck.  The foredeck and boat deck feature stainless steel stanchions and lifelines.  The protection offered by the Portuguese bridge makes it an incredibly secure area for scanning the horizon while underway.  The cockpit is high-walled to keep the seas out, and the waterline deck area has built-in freeing ports to quickly shed any boarding seas.

FOREDECK

You get to the foredeck by going forward via the Portuguese bridge through a hinged molded fiberglass door on the starboard side.  Immediately forward of the Portuguese bridge there is a large deck box along centerline for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords, fenders, etc.  The stout stainless steel double anchor roller is backed by a rugged Maxwell electric windlass that can be operated by deck foot buttons or by a toggle in the pilothouse. The spacious foredeck of the Nordhavn 46 is easy to move around, protected by tall stainless steel rails, and features a wonderful dual anchor bow roller platform forward. Anchoring and being secure are priorities aboard Satchmo and a reinforced bollard is prominent on centerline.

While in Turkey in 2007 the owners engaged an inventive canvas maker to create a fantastic awning for the bow that covers from the pilothouse all the way up to the windlass. Incredibly, it can be up and in use while you are underway; the captain has safe, unobstructed vision from the pilothouse because he/she is looking UNDER the awning, while the first mate and guests are lounging in blissful shade!! The awning is made of a gray, breathable fabric from South Africa that has a very high sun blocking factor and it also has a sunscreen side that zips in and out.  (And, the awning was strong enough to have withstood a sudden Force 9 gale at anchor south of Elba!)

Enthusiastic Ellen (owner) would also like to add, “We had some great cushions made in Turkey that we just spread around the deck—they’re cushy enough to sit over the various hatches on the foredeck with no problem, lumps, or bumps. I can put the awning up, or take it down, by myself in about ten minutes. This is the best addition we made to Satchmo—it doubles the living space and makes the cruising dream even better!”

  • 120 lb. “Spade” anchor (Powerboats Reports: best holding anchor)

  • 400 ft. 3/8" HT chain primary rode (with 200 ft. 3/4” NE 3 strand spliced to the anchor chain for extra long scope)

  • At the ready, Fortress FX-37 with custom, quick release mount on port bow, to attach to 400 ft. of 3/4” NE 3 strand in the anchor locker

  • In the lazarette, stock 60 lb. CQR anchor, as a spare and for multi-anchor storm conditions; 30 ft of HT chain at ready in forward deck box for quick attachment

  • Additional anchors: 35 lb stern anchor; 15 lb Bruce for tender in heavy seas; 10 lb Fisherman for 2 anchor setup in storm conditions (all stored off the boat)

  • Custom awning with breathable UV-blocking grey fabric and zippered side sunscreen

COCKPIT and SWIM PLATFORM

The cockpit of Satchmo is a great place to BBQ or to just relax when at anchor.  The cockpit freshwater and seawater wash down makes it easy to maintain this area. Extra stainless steel handrails have been installed to make moving about safer in heavy seas. The cockpit has three boarding entries – port, starboard and aft. There is a stainless ladder mounted to port that provides another access up to the boat deck. Down, there is a stainless framed, teak planked swim platform with swim ladder aft behind the cockpit that is wonderful for SCUBA diving and makes a great landing dock when you arrive by tender.

  • Remote steering station with Mathers engine, bowthruster, and Simrad controls; plus others, ideal for short-handed docking

  • Hydraulic steering system

  • Emergency tiller

  • Spare stock 60 lb CQR anchor

  • Spare Oil for Lugger, Genset, Yanmar, Naiad cooling, transmissions; fuel treatment fluids

BOAT DECK

The area above the saloon is a wonderful platform for storing your tender and has room for other toys and equipment.  The boat deck houses the ship’s tender which is a 12’ Aquascan RIB with steering console, automatic bilge pump, navigation lights and custom stainless steel boarding rails.  The tender is mounted on custom cradle chocks with securing tie downs.  The boom has electric winches mounted on it for launching the ship’s tender; a new winch motor, cable and blocks were installed in 2006.  The boom itself was ordered one foot longer than normal to make launching easier.

The boat deck can also be accessed aft from the cockpit ladder and hatch.  With the tender launched, you have a nice area to lounge on the boat deck.

  • Remote steering station with Mathers engine, thruster, and Simrad pilot controls, plus others, ideal for sighting coral heads in the Bahamas

  • Mast and boom arrangement to support dry stack exhaust (with custom stainless heat protection cover) and to launch dinghy. Mast assembly also is used for mounting key antennas for electronics – VHF, radar, etc.

ENGINE ROOM

The engine room of the Nordhavn 46 is an incredible assemblage of machinery.   The hull shape with rounded bilge is leveled with removable floor boards and is easy to move around in. Access is from the saloon hatch or from the large door in the guest cabin. The dry stack exhaust is cleanly routed up and away, wrapped in a thermal jacket.  The powerful Lugger main engine is perfectly installed on centerline. The aft area houses the generator and wing engine.  The entire engine room is insulated with lead sound deadening foam and shrouded with perforated aluminum sheeting for a crisp, clean professional look.

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

Satchmo’s owners are proud to have maintained, improved, and so thoroughly enjoyed this stellar 46.  She is a remarkable vessel that can take you anywhere you want to go, SAFELY and in comfort.

Each winter, Satchmo has been enhanced. Prior to the NAR, extensive work was done at Rybovich Boat Yard for blue water and European travel. In the Med, extensive work was done in Spain, Turkey, Italy, and France. Since returning to the USA, extensive work was done in spring of 2011 at Washburn’s Boat Yard in Maryland:

Spring 2011 work--  “Spurs” (for lobster traps); main propeller tuned; maintenance rehab & update of all Naiad mechanicals; Vacuflush toilet rebuilt, including new vacuum pump; Lugger and Yanmar stuffing box hoses replaced; Garmin AIS touch chart plotter added; VHF/AIS with loud hailer added; two drawer-type refrigerator/freezers (with icemakers) added; inverter bypass installed; master stateroom hatch screens replaced; gas Weber grill and custom fixtures added; dinghy rehab; Sounder screen replaced; AC controls in master stateroom replaced; water maker serviced; Link 2000 replaced; air horn replaced; fire extinguishers serviced and tagged; obsolete wiring removed; galvanic isolator added; 30amp/120 volt service added; stabilizers checked; fresh bottom paint.  (A copy of the yard bill is available upon request with any offer submitted).

2010 -- While in Port Napoleon, France, the entire hull was painted with Pearl Gray Awlgrip and a red boot stripe; the fuel tanks and lines were emptied and hand cleaned; a number of teak and cover changes were also performed.

Examples of additional improvements over the course of a 9 year ownership include:

  • Stainless steel railings on port and starboard teak railings

  • Port and starboard cleat horns, strongly backed

  • Towing eye, strongly backed

  • Additional deck boxes, strongly backed

  • Teak work throughout

  • Stainless handholds on ceilings and passageways

BROKERS COMMENTS:

Satchmo is an exceptional Nordhavn 46.  Her current owners had another Nordhavn 46 before purchasing Satchmo and that knowledge and experience allowed them not only to buy the best boat on the market then, but also helped them to finalize fitting out to prepare for their first grand adventure – the 2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally.   Satchmo was one of five Nordhavn 46s that completed the trip, and many of you who have seen the NAR DVD will delight in knowing that Ellen, the star of the video, was aboard Satchmo.  After seven seasons in Europe Satchmo returned home and has just completed a Maine summer.   A location change and family demands have lessened time aboard, and so Satchmo is now available for purchase.

To consider the purchase of a vessel like a Nordhavn 46, which can literally take you anywhere in the world, there are three key “life ingredients” that must come into alignment to create the right balance – time, health and money.  Satchmo is priced for a quick sale and represents an exceptional value…she’s now tugging at her dock lines in Stuart, FL, hoping you will take her back out to sea…

ASKING: $469,000
LOCATION: Stuart, FL
