OVERVIEW:

“Shagpoke” (Vancouver Island slang for Great Blue Heron) is a gem of a Pacific Northwest Nordhavn 40.  The current owners have owned and cared for her since 2004 and she shows beautifully.

Canadian Prospects Note:  Shagpoke is a Canadian registered vessel.

US Prospects Note:   As a North American- built vessel “Shagpoke” may qualify as a NAFTA product.  Re-registration in U.S. waters would require a rather simple re-importation process that should be verified independently by any prospective Buyer.

She is hull #10 in the Nordhavn 40 series — perhaps the most capable 40-foot passagemaking powerboat ever designed.  She has a solid fiberglass hull, internal ballast, propeller protected in aperture, Lugger main engine, Yanmar wing engine, and the well-proven Nordhavn dry stack exhaust system and gravity feed fuel system, producing one of the most reliable engine systems fitted on any yacht.

“Shagpoke” has the standard Nordhavn 40 interior layout, and as the accompanying photos show, she has light laminate panels with solid teak moldings throughout.  The reflective character of the light panels brightens the interior and the solid teak moldings and planking accent the panels beautifully.  The interior has a very pleasing feel.

She has diesel hydronic heat throughout and air-conditioning for the salon area.

Walk-through:

Enter the salon from the cockpit through a Diamond/Seaglaze commercial grade door.  There is a dinette settee and table to starboard and a reclining swivel chair with ottoman to port.  Outboard to port there are lockers in the original standard configuration plus a shelf that extends from them across the aft salon bulkhead.  The galley has light Corian countertops, and is to port at the forward end of the salon.  The TV and audio-visual equipment are to starboard.  Just forward there are steps up to the pilothouse and down to the hallway access to the head and sleeping cabins.  The head, with separate stall shower is to starboard, and the guest stateroom is to port.  Engine room access is through the guest cabin, although there are mechanic’s and egress hatches in the main salon.  The master stateroom is at the forward end of the hallway.  It is configured with a centerline double bed and a lot of locker and drawer space.

Around the deck

Access for boarding is through the starboard side cockpit bulwark door or transom door aft.  There are seats molded into the cockpit port and starboard with stowage for propane and miscellaneous gear beneath the seat hatches.  Access to the Portuguese bridge, foredeck and boatdeck is through the salon and out the pilothouse doors port and starboard.  The Portuguese bridge serves as a secure deck passage, observation platform, and also helps to break up solid water that might board from forward.  All the way forward on the foredeck, the Maxwell vertical windlass is mounted in a lower area of the deck designed for handling ground tackle.   Mud and debris from the anchor chain is confined to the area, and drains all the way to the waterline via two scuppers so that it does not streak the hull topsides.  Aft of the pilothouse, the boat deck serves well for tender stowage with enough room remaining for deck stowage boxes.  To streamline launching “Shagpoke” has a unique centerline overhanging custom set of stainless steel deck chocks for the tender.

Salon:

The volume of the full beam cabin of the Nordhavn 40 is one of the many interior elements that functions so well for long passages and for living aboard.  In fact, there are several couples who have lived aboard for years at a time.

The bulkheads are light laminate with teak trim moldings, table top, window valances, galley face and port side lockers.  The combination of materials creates a traditional, somewhat Herreshoff scheme.  The laminate panels take maximum advantage of natural light from the six opening windows in the cabin sides and aft bulkhead.  Each of the windows has an insect screen and has a dual effect Hunter-Douglas “Silhouette” blind over it.

The headliner is of upholstered light fabric panels separated by teak battens.  There is a four-loop overhead handrail fastened between the panels as well.  Overhead lights recessed into the headliner panels are controlled with a bulkhead mounted dimmer switch.

Custom book shelves were built into the angled inboard face of the galley, and a burl top side table sits just aft of the galley.

Lockers outboard on the port side extend aft from the galley, and a custom shelf extends aft from them across the aft salon bulkhead running just above a magazine rack mounted on the aft bulkhead.

An Ekornes “Stressless” chair sits in the port aft corner of the salon, but can be positioned as desired along with its ottoman.

The salon floor is carpeted for comfort but has the additional benefit of augmenting the sound attenuation measures built into the engine room.

Review of salon features:

  • (6) Diamond/Seaglaze opening windows with insect screens

  • Hunter-Douglas Silhouette window coverings

Galley:

The galley is spacious, efficient and impressively equipped.  There is room to move, but everything is close at hand.  The floor is very durable “Lonseal”.  There is locker and drawer storage throughout.  The Force-10 stove and oven are easy to use, and the oven door folds mostly under the oven when open.  Anyone working in the galley can easily join in the conversation with others in the salon.

Review of galley features:

  • Double stainless steel sink with Corian covers

  • Grohe faucet with removable crane/sprayer

  • Force 10 3-burner stove and oven (2ea. 20lb. propane tanks are stowed in a cockpit locker)

Pilothouse

The Nordhavn 40 pilothouse is another element of a true passagemaking yacht with its large instrument console and steering station, reverse raked windscreens, comfortable settee and dinette table, and watch berth.  The pilothouse is removed from other living areas to reduce light intrusion into the pilothouse from other activity onboard.  Normal operation generally consists of standing at the steering station for close-in maneuvering, and steering with the autopilot while keeping watch from the settee on longer passages. An off watch crew member can stay comfortably close at hand in the pilot berth just aft of the settee.

Review of pilothouse features:

  • Large instrument console and steering station

  • Tilt-up chart table port side

  • Settee with dinette table

  • Pilothouse berth

  • Durable Lonseal flooring

  • Side doors are split “dutch-door” type

  • Dimmer switch for overhead lighting

  • Windshield wipers

Master stateroom

The master stateroom is a comfortable retreat with its centerline bed and custom Handraft Mattress Company mattress.  There is organized stowage all around that includes deep overhead locker storage port and starboard, hanging locker space behind louvered doors port and starboard, and drawer space aft and under the bed.  “Shagpoke” was also built with even more utilitarian custom shelving port and starboard beneath the overhead lockers.

A deck hatch and four opening ports supply natural light and ventilation.

Review of master stateroom features:

  • Centerline bed with gas springs for access to stowage space beneath

  • HMC custom mattress

Head

The head in the Nordhavn 40 is convenient to the entire interior, and large for a 40’ yacht.  The shower in particular has very good headroom for tall crew members, and also has a clear glass door with a frosted sea shell pattern.  There is plenty of working surface on the vanity counter top and organized storage besides.  The toilet is a Sealand Vacuflush.

Review of head features:

  • Corian counter top (grey, white, and brown mottled)

  • Sealand Vacuflush head with fresh water flush

  • Fiberglass shower stall with good headroom, shower seat, and dry storage locker for towels, etc.

  • Clear glass shower door
