Nordhavn Atlantic Passage 2017

Ship's Log

6/18/17
The NAP boats have arrived in Gibraltar!

At 10 PM GMT (5 PM EDT), the trio of boats that left Horta together arrived at Gibraltar, commencing their 3rd leg and officially completing their Atlantic crossing. Robert Lee on board N55 Angela reports: The group tried up in Gibraltar at Ocean Village Marina. Totall distance traveled was 4,115 nm. Today the group ran along the coast to stay out of the worst of the winds and seas blowing from the east. We finally rounded the corner and entered the Strait of Gibraltar at 7:40 PM (local time) for the last 16 miles to Gibraltar and the marina. Congrats NAP boats!

Comment: Today was a “makeup day" for the seas we had yesterday with everyone getting a good night’s sleep, after midnight. We encountered heavy shipping traffic - signal allowed us to check the latest weather in the Strait. Currently it looks like there may be a lull in the winds late on Sunday so we have increased speed to take advantage of the reduction of winds for a few hours hoping to arrive in Gibraltar by or near sunset Sunday.

Distance made since last stop (Horta): 757 nm
Ave. speed: 7.08 kts
Fuel burn: 5.67 GPH
Weather: Today was one of those days that all the crews wish would pass as fast as possible. It started with a large swell from the NW and winds from the N in the mid 20s. Large limply confused seas was the theme of the day with everyone finding a place to settle in for the ride. Seas were 8 to 10 feet with an occasional larger wave rolling by.  The latest weather report looks like we will encounter easterly winds as we approach shore late tomorrow. Currently the winds in the Strait of Gibraltar still look to be in the 20 to 30 knts range for Monday night and it is starting to look like a side stop in Rota, Spain is becoming a more possible item on the agenda

Distance made last 12 hours:  85 nm
Distance made since last stop (Horta): 592 nm
Ave. speed: 7.73 nm
Fuel burn: 5.73 GPH
Weather: Today the winds have shifted to the north and we are expecting a increase in winds starting after dark. All the boats are starting to prepare for the heavy weather predicted tomorrow.
Comment: The fleet has shifted time again and we are now in GMT time. There will be one more time change on Saturday which will be our last and set us up with time in Western Europe. This afternoon we passed the half way point on this leg of the passage ending in either Rota or Gibraltar. The crew on Relish continue to catch fish with Michelle, Rick's wife, actually doing all the catching and letting the guys real one in every now and then to appease their ego. On Moxie they caught two Marlin but let them go.

Comment: Caught a very nice “Black Fin Tuna” last night! Put up a good fight but we won the battle! Pass the Wasabi, please!!!

6/14/17 – 5:00 pm GMT (1:00 pm EDT) report
N55 Angela
Position: N 38 45.00 W 019 52.53
Distance to go (to Gibraltar): 715 nm
Distance made last 12 hours:  N/A due to route change
Distance made since last stop (Horta): 414 nm
Ave. speed: N/A
Fuel burn: 5.42 GPH
Weather: The winds are now light but we do have a large rolling swell from the NW at about 6 ft. Light winds are expected until tomorrow. The latest weather report has increasing winds and seas from the port beam starting late Friday and into Saturday. The latest weather report from Commander's suggests that we delay passage into the Strait of Gibraltar due to very high winds and instead route ourselves to Rota, Spain on Sunday to wait for more favourable conditions. Our new route is now shorter and the DTA mileage reduction now reflects this change.
Comment: See Nordhavn Live

Weather have had a current with us the entire passage so far giving us an average speed of 7.7 knts. , much faster than planned. Our plan is to arrive at Gibraltar early in the morning before the winds pick up. Currently it looks like we may have to fight our way into the Med.We receive our next weather report on Wed. to get an update for the approach to the Portuguese coast.

Comment: Today the crew of Relish caught a black fin tuna which they landed and almost landed a small Blue Marlin but it spit the hook out at the last minute. The Relish crew is the most fishing crew in the fleet. The only confusing issue aboard Relish is that they have two crew members with basically the same name: Michelle, Ricks wife, and Michel the new crew member from Canada that was aboard Jura for the last leg of the passage.

Comment: Today we shifted the clocks forward one more time before arrival in Horta, we are now 3 hrs ahead of Bermuda and 4 hrs ahead of Florida. Everyone is getting anxious to step foot on land. We also have the upcoming storm on our minds and hope to be docked before the worst of it hits Horta. A notice has gone out to the fleet that they should be prepared for big seas and rough conditions. Aleoli has again increased rpm again to move us along even faster toward arrival. We expect to arrive mid afternoon tomorrow.

Wind and seas increasing slightly. Still hoping to get to Horta before the “big” blow! At about 0430 this morning the Lat and Long were exactly the same! How many times in my life will I see that again????

Distance to go (to Horta): 479 nm
Distance made last 12 hours: 85 nm
Distance made since last stop (Bernuda): 1360 nm
Ave. speed: 7.06 knots
Fuel burn: 3.89 GPH
Weather: Winds from 190 true at 14 knts and waves 2 to 4 ft with both slowly increasing as the day goes on.
Comment: Aleoli has had a water maker problem with the control board of the water maker not energizing the LP pump. This has put them on water rationing. Today one of the crew wired the LP seawater pumped directly to a 120 Volt outlet and now have the ability to make water. Aleoli added 25 RPM to their speed to shorten our passage time to Horta after checking their fuel burn calculations. The concern is a weather system arriving in Horta the same time we are with winds to 30 knts and gusts higher late Thur. We are all waiting for the next forecast on Tues. morning with updated weather info. to further plan our arrival. The weather is cooling and we are both fighting currents and have them with us several times a day making overall speed estimates hard to predict.

The new forecast received indicated moderate weather until Thursday. The day of arrival when we could get wind to 30 knts and gusts to 40 just as we arrive in Horta. We'll get an updated forecast on Tues which will carry us through arrival. Aleoli is reviewing their fuel reserve to see how much additional speed they can increase to hopefully arrive earlier. Current ETA is 1800 Thursday.

Distance made last 12 hours: 82 nm

Ave. speed: 6.83 knots
Fuel burn: 4 gph
Weather: All the crews woke up this morning to 8 to 10 ft. Long rolling swells with a 12 to 15 second period.
Comment: Over the day the swells have decreased to 6 ft and the winds have stayed light. Moxie has caught 2 fish, the only boat to do so in 3 days but at a price - aboard Moxie one of the cupboards in the galley opened and the olive oil flew numerous feet before shattering into pieces on the floor. They have decided to stop fishing until the swells die down. At 0816 we passed the 1/3 mark of the passage to Horta.

Comment: Passed the 1/4 point early in the morning today. On Angela we had a land based bird that flew into the boat and Moxie had a dragonfly flying around their boat. As expected every day is “Groundhog Day” at sea.

N55 Angela, which had been reporting the statistics for the ship’s log used 645.1 gallons of fuel for the 1,036-nm passage, leaving her with a reserve of 1,650 gallons. She averaged a healthy speed of 8.08 knots over the 5 ½ day passage, bolstered by the effects of spending three days in the Gulf Stream.
