Subject: Storm Windows
Hello Scott and Mary! Scott, I sincerely appreciate the
time and effort you put into VofE, and the support of Mary to give you
the time to do it! What a great source of information! I have been
catching up on your entries in order and currently I'm "with you both" in Opua in Dec08.
I'll catch up. I promise.
I'm a former sailboat owner (36') with five or so years of coastal
cruising and one offshore passage (a Pacific Cup in the late 80's). I
have many years of small inland powerboat experience.
Scott, have you installed storm windows on your N46 salon windows, ala
M/Y Jenny? What's your thinking on this?
Scott Flanders from Egret responds:
Mike, yes we have storm windows. We bought the receivers from PAE and had the windows fabricated from 1/2" lexan ourselves. In retrospect we would make them 3/8" lexan which would be plenty strong. PAE uses 1/2" plexiglass, not lexan. We found by leaving them up they act like a substitute double pane, keeping us cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. We never take them off except to clean the glass and window frames.
Only once did we get popped on the side windows and this was on this past trip from NZ to Tasmania. They got rattled good!! This said, the boat windows would have been well up to the task.
Thank you for taking the time to read VofE from front to back. There is a lot of information as you said and you will have learned a lot by the time you are current. Hopefully someday you will be writing your own blog like Jenny, Egret and so many others.
