Patrick and Christine Mouligne
Nordhavn 4601 - Frog Kiss
Perhaps this installation of Where are they now? should be re-titled Where is it now? This month we’re catching up with Patrick and Christine Mouligne, owners of the very first Nordhavn ever built: 4601. By Patrick’s estimate, he and his wife are the boat’s fourth owners. And they don’t have any plans for the hull to change hands again in the near future.
Patrick and Christine purchased Frog Kiss in 2006 and since then have logged many miles under the well-traveled keel. The boat has been homeported in Newport, Rhode Island, but her primary residence has been the ocean. Trips back and forth from Newport to Bermuda and the Caribbean plus cruises throughout the Med have added to the main engine’s 4,700 total hours.
Patrick and Christine initially hoped to participate in the 2007 MedBound rally, but a scheduling conflict left them unable to join. So last year, they shipped the boat to Europe and have cruised the area extensively. The boat has been in France since late summer but the couple departed last month for Tunisia – by way of Corsica and Sardinia – where they plan to winter the boat.
Having spent 50-plus years as a sailor (with a resume that includes seven single-handed roundtrips from Newport to Bermuda), Patrick has nothing but great things to say about his recently found rank of powerboater and of his boat, despite her “elder stateswoman” status. “Let us just say she is aging very gracefully,” says Patrick. “She is showing a few wrinkles due to overexposure to the sun and the elements, but she sure is solid and has handled the rather weird and unpredictable weather of the Med extremely well. Seas build very quickly and are extremely sharp and close to each other. Many of our trips would have been very painful or impossible in any other [make] boat of a similar size range up to 55 feet. So many times I [have] thought, ‘Am I ever happy to be in my Nordhavn.’”
You can catch more of Patrick and Christine Mouligne, and their beloved workhorse Frog Kiss, in a new Nordhavn ad debuting next month in Passagemaker magazine.
