Meet Ted Robie
He grew up in a small waterfront community on Long Island Sound where he spent his summers either in or on the water learning to sail in 9' dinghy called a "Turnabout" that was built by his father. He earned a degree in Psychology and later a Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance from Alfred University in western New York (which would unwittingly become handy during his years as a yacht broker).
Ted’s career in the boat business began in 1978 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Originally intended to be a temporary job working for a respected new and used sailboat dealer, it turned into a career of 32 years and counting. With a mortgage and two kids in college, it would appear retirement is a ways off!
Sailing and windsurfing have been his passion with extensive cruising and racing experience up and down the East Coast and eight Newport to Bermuda races, so far.
Realizing that he missed the face to face interaction of retail and brokerage sales, Ted moved back into the office he had left. As Vice President of one of the largest new and used boat dealerships in New England, Ted cemented his reputation as an honest, hard working, sales professional. He has served on the Professional Standards and Ethics committee for the Yacht Brokers Association of America for over ten years, and gained his Certified Professional Yacht Broker status in 2005.
When an opportunity arose to get involved with high end custom yacht building, Ted accepted the position of Senior Yacht Broker for the John Alden Company. Over the twelve years at Alden Ted assisted in bringing to market several new sail and powerboat designs that had marked success and rose to VP of Sales for the company. In 2003 Ted accepted a position as Sales Director for The Hinckley Company in Florida concentrating on new boat sales.
Ted has said that he has been blessed over the last 20 years to be associated with the “top of the Class” in boat building. He is most at home with the opportunity to offer both the “new build” experience and guidance through the maze of brokerage offerings. Nordhavn Yachts does both with unparalleled excellence," he says.
Ted feels his low-pressure but persistent approach to the selling process is what his clients appreciate and is what has earned him success, along with his belief that “it makes all the difference when you do not have to make excuses for the product you offer for sale”!
And all this hard work ... While Ted's impressive resume includes varied boat builders and brokerages, he couldn't be happier right now working for Nordhavn. He feels few manufacturers are better poised to ride out the current fiscal crisis as is Nordhavn. "They are a leader now and I believe will be for a long time to come," he said. "It would be wonderful and fitting to complete my career here.”
Ted can be reached in the office at 772-223-6331 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
