Brief Overview:

The Nordhavn 46 was the first Nordhavn model, and the boat that established Nordhavn’s reputation for the most capable production cruising powerboats that has carried through to today.  The 46’s continue to bolster their reputation as trans-oceanic passage makers with five circumnavigations logged to date. 

“NOETA” is a Nordhavn 46 that has been updated and upgraded by her last two owners.  The current owners are a cruising family of four (see their MV NOETA blog), who decided to invest in a larger Nordhavn for their extended cruising plans.  During their ownership they have upgraded all of the galley appliances, increased organized storage space, re-upholstered the salon settees, added a new custom mattress in the master stateroom, and new tender and outboard engine.  Also of note is the unique detail among Nordhavn 46’s, which is the addition of a helm chair in the pilothouse. 

Interior Layout:

Entering from the aft cockpit, due to the asymmetrical layout the salon opens wide with an L-shaped settee and dining table to port, and a versatile, long settee to starboard, which also makes a comfortable berth underway.  The galley is forward of the salon.  To starboard of the galley are the steps down to the staterooms and steps up to the pilothouse.  The guest stateroom access is through the first door in the hallway.  Primary engine room access is through the guest stateroom, although there are large hatches in the salon sole.  The entrances to the two heads are to starboard in the hallway, and all the way forward is the master stateroom.

The interior joinery is teak throughout.


The galley counter runs athwartship, and connects visually with the salon.  The countertops are light grey Surrell.  All of the major appliances in the galley were replaced in 2017, shortly after her current owners purchased NOETA.  The work was done in Seattle by Emerald Harbor Marine, who do most of the Nordhavn commissioning and service work in the Seattle area.  The craftsmanship for the refits is excellent.

The Nordhavn 46 pilothouse is designed for long range cruising for crew gathering, operations, and off-watch comfort.   The presence of a helm chair is unique to NOETA, something that most 46’s do not have. 

The navigation/radar screens are mounted on the instrument console so that they are legible from anywhere in the pilothouse.  The windscreens are sized to withstand wave loading and the center two are fitted with wipers.  Two side windows are opening for good cross ventilation.  There are also sliding doors port and starboard for deck access.

There is a settee aft, and an off-watch “pilot berth” above the settee.  The dinette table has a nice inlay.  A locker with a louvered door outboard to starboard is a perfect place to stow emergency gear or jackets. There is also good drawer storage to starboard below the chart table section of the joinery.

All of the above plus heat and air-conditioning, make the pilothouse a great gathering place for crew on passage.

Guest Stateroom:

Down the steps to the hallway and to port is the access to the midship guest cabin with its engine room access.  This stateroom has over and under bunks.  There is also a nice work desk with multiple drawers.  A large hanging locker is aft of the bunks.  The cabin sole is teak and spruce.

The insulated engine room door is in the cabin’s aft bulkhead.


Hallway, Fore and Aft Heads, and Laundry:

There are two heads in the hallway; one across from the guest stateroom and one is forward adjacent to the master stateroom, both with showers, toilets and vanities with sinks.   Each head has an opening port.

Forward of the heads and just aft of the master stateroom (behind louvered doors) is a combination Splendide washer/dryer.


Master Stateroom:

The master stateroom is all the way forward in the hallway.  The bed is on the centerline, and the cabin is loaded with organized storage space in drawers, lockers and hanging lockers.  There is also a TV on the aft bulkhead. 

There are opening ports port and starboard and deck hatches overhead.  The current owners added a new custom mattress in 2017. 


Engine Room:

The engine room access is both, from the guest stateroom, and where necessary of longer interval maintenance, through the hatches in the salon sole.  The space is insulated on the underside of the salon sole above.  Access to the mechanical systems in the engine room including the main and wing engines, generator, water maker, fuel system manifolds among other systems is good. 


Mechanical Systems:

The Nordhavn mechanical systems are legendary for their performance and reliability.  The reliability stems from the systems component selections and system design.  Some of the early Nordhavn 46’s, including those that have circumnavigated, have engine hours in excess of 14,000, and are still being cruised extensively, without having an overhaul.  The Lugger main engines, based upon the John Deere 6068 block, have tallied more than 30,000 hours in commercial service.  The addition of the dry stack exhaust with a keel cooler minimizes any contact with salt water by the engine.  The keel-cooled configuration also eliminates an engine mounted raw water pump and its vulnerable rubber impeller.

Decks and Equipment:

The decks aft are surrounded by high bulwarks, with boarding doors midship on the starboard side and on the port side in the cockpit.  The starboard side deck bulwark offers good security moving fore and aft, and leads to the security of the Portuguese bridge forward of the pilothouse.  Moving around the pilothouse to port accesses the steps up to the boat deck where the tender and two of three deck storage boxes are located. 

The mast and boom, which also support the exhaust stack, are fitted with electric winches for launching and retrieving the Walker Bay tender.  There is also access to the pilothouse roof, where two of the solar panels and the life raft are mounted.  Additional solar panels are mounted on an aft set of tender davits. 

The mast and boom are also used for launching and retrieving the paravane fish. 

Deck Features and Equipment:
