Accommodations The Nordhavn 72 brings luxury, comfort and detail to a level unmatched in any other vessel her size. Complementing the elegant yet businesslike exterior, the Nordhavn 72's interior features the gorgeous woodwork for which P.A.E.'s craftsmen are famous and is further enhanced by the work of yacht interior designer Scott Cole of Ardeo Design. Granite counter tops, stone flooring, rich carpet, leather and the finest available entertainment equipment, appliances, fittings and fixtures are all standard on the Nordhavn 72.
"For the flagship of our Nordhavn line, we rose the level of standard features to the highest possible point and included many items as standard that are options on other vessels," said Dan Streech, president of P.A.E. The 14-page standard equipment list includes products from Bose, RCL, Sony, Sub Zero, Thermadore, PCM, Exalto, Bosh, Cantilupi, Carlisle & Finch, Glendenning, Charles, Grohe and more.
To the generous 21-foot beam add a relatively high profile with lots of hull below the waterline, mix in P.A.E.'s decades of experience building more than 500 oceangoing yachts and it becomes easier to understand how the Nordhavn 72 can provide such spacious accommodations.
The carpeted main salon features varnished handcrafted cabinetry and seats six in upholstered teak chairs at the teak dinning table. From the movable chair or along the starboard side settee, enjoy the 42-inch, flat screen plasma TV that rises on a lift system on the port side and the unparalleled sound quality of the Bose sound system with DVD player. Gather around the teak coffee table or along the bar for casual dining.
The Nordhavn 72's galley is a chef's dream. With ample storage for even the most ambitious cruise, the galley features a Sub Zero side-by-side refrigerator/freezer finished in teak paneling, two 5-cubic-foot GE freezers, a Thermadore LPG stove/electric oven, GE Advantium microwave with exhaust blower, GE Monogram 12-inch stainless steel trash compactor, full-size Bosch dishwasher, and Insinkerator garbage disposal. Finished with granite counter tops, ceramic tile or stone flooring, and teak lockers the galley is as attractive as it is functional.
Moving forward into the lower deck, the Nordhavn 72 offers a spacious, teak paneled guest cabin, with hanging locker, lounge chair and queen-sized bed. The guest head features ceramic or stone tile flooring, granite countertops, aluminum and glass bi-fold shower door, and teak cabinetry.
A large, luxurious owner's cabin with a center island king-sized bed is finished in varnished teak paneling. The cabin offers ample storage space in the hanging lockers, a TV locker with retractable doors, lounge chair, carpeted flooring over Soundown underlayment pad, and a vanity with SS swing out swivel seat. The master head, trimmed in ceramic tile or stone flooring, granite countertops and all teak cabinetry, offers comfort and space.
The area that truly separates the Nordhavn 72 is her commercial-like wheelhouse. Measuring a full 150 square feet and elevated nearly 10 feet above the waterline, the wheelhouse offers a commanding view of the boat and your surroundings. Simple black Formica surfaces accent the crisp elegance of varnished teak floors and cabinets. Designed with serious cruisers in mind, the wheelhouse includes a teak dinette table and settee with ample room for chart storage. Two Stidds lowback Slimline helm seats provide comfort and efficiency for the captain and navigator. Choose from a captain's cabin with daybed and chart table or double berth. The wheelhouse provides plenty of bookshelf space as well.
Every effort has been taken to minimize noise in the Nordhavn 72. All structural bulkheads between staterooms and heads have ¾-inch thick sound insulation with another 3/8 inch of bulkhead finish material over top. The hull lamination above the propeller rotation plane includes two layers of E-A-R Specialty Composites Isodamp CN tiles, alternating between the resin and chopped glass to form a constrained layer damping system. The Engine room ceiling and forward bulkhead are treated with 3-inch insulation and absorption wrap. The inboard tank side, aft bulkhead, underside of deck, forward side of engine room bulkhead and ventilation ducts are treated with 2-inch insulation and absorption wrap and covered with white perforated aluminum panels by Soundown. Similar levels of sound reduction are taken in all areas of the boat.
Overall, the interior construction details and high-quality materials used in the Nordhavn 72 clearly represent a luxurious level of fit and finish. But more importantly, these details follow the theme of sensible, offshore functionality. When one has the opportunity of closely looking at the way the interior of this capable ship has been built, he will understand why Nordhavns have the reputation for being "oceans apart from all the rest."
